For an entire generation of readers and moviegoers, few romances have inspired the kind of devotion that Bella Swan and Edward Cullen did in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga. From the supernatural love triangle and Forks’ perpetually gloomy skies to the Team Edward versus Team Jacob debates, the franchise became a pop culture phenomenon that refused to stay buried. Now, Meyer is preparing to take audiences back into that familiar vampire universe, with a new adaptation offering a perspective fans have been waiting to experience.
And Netflix is not treating this return as a fleeting trip to Forks. The streaming giant has made a significant commitment to the project, suggesting that Edward Cullen’s side of the story could have considerably more room to unfold than initially anticipated.
Netflix gives Midnight Sun a two-season commitment
Netflix has committed to two seasons of its animated adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s Midnight Sun, giving the highly anticipated Twilight spin-off a major head start. The update came during Lionsgate’s Q2 2027 earnings call on November 5, where the studio discussed the future of some of its most recognizable franchises. As reported by Lionsgate, Kevin Beggs, Chairman of the Lionsgate Television Group, confirmed that Netflix has committed to two seasons of the animated adaptation. Beggs also credited Meyer’s enthusiasm for television, particularly animation, as a major reason the project took shape.

He noted that the author and her team are closely involved in the creative process alongside Lionsgate and Netflix, adding that the studio has high expectations for the series as it looks to expand the existing universe. First announced in September 2024, Midnight Sun adapts Meyer’s 2020 companion novel, which revisits the events of the original Twilight through Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen‘s perspective rather than Bella Swan’s. That shift is particularly significant for longtime readers, who have spent years wondering what was happening behind Edward’s carefully maintained composure while Bella narrated their romance.
But a two-season commitment is only part of the excitement. With the creative team already in place, the next big question for fans is when they can finally return to Forks.
When will Midnight Sun arrive on Netflix?
Netflix has not announced an official premiere date or confirmed voice cast for the animated series. However, production details previously obtained by What’s on Netflix indicated a tentative schedule running from August 2026 through May 2027, with Los Angeles serving as the base for voice recording and production. The outlet also reported that casting searches had begun for recurring roles, including Jacob Black and Billy Black, although the principal voices behind Edward and Bella remain unannounced.

Based on that production window and the time typically required to complete animation, a late 2027 debut would be an optimistic possibility, while 2028 appears more realistic. These remain estimates rather than confirmed Netflix plans. Still, having two seasons secured from the outset gives the project a promising runway.
For the Twihards who have kept the franchise alive through rereads, rewatches, and years of Team Edward nostalgia, this is another reason to revisit Meyer’s supernatural world.
