Mya Says What Married to Herself Actually Means

Mya is living her own truth.

The singer—who admitted she caused quite a stir by marrying herself in 2013 and depicting the wedding in her 2015 music video for “The Truth”—is clarifying just what she meant by the gesture and how it helps her prioritize self love and protect her own peace.

“Getting to know yourself is first and foremost,” Mya shared in an exclusive interview with E! News. “It’s your internal compass and how you move, navigate, also make decisions.”

As the 46-year-old saw it, if someone is “uncertain about who you are,” it’s easy for them to be swayed and “to be pushed and pulled, but also affected by other people’s opinions and criticisms.”

“So, when ‘I got married to myself’ in a music video that turned into this whole fiasco online,” she laughed, “what I was trying to convey was: Commit to you. Learn you. Take the time.”

For the “It’s All About Me” singer, that was far more important than rushing into something because of familial or societal pressure, especially because “self is always with you.”
