Moment police officer is hit with his own baton in chaotic stop and search – before suspect flees on e-bike

A police officer was hit with his own baton in a chaotic stop and search – before the suspect fled on an e-bike.

Mahroy Stephenson, 30, is wanted on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent after the alleged attack on Soho Road in Handsworth, Birmingham, on Friday.

The officer was left with a head injury and had to be rushed to hospital after the incident.

Footage shows two officers from West Midlands Police attempting to restrain a man in a black hoodie who is clinging to the railings.

As they tussle on the pavement next to a busy road, one officer kicks the suspect in the leg while the other tries to wrestle him to the ground.

They can be heard telling the man to ‘stop resisting’ and to ‘get on the floor now’.

Stunned bystanders watch on as the police attempt to make their arrest, but the man keeps struggling.

When the suspect continues to resist, one officer warns that he will ‘use his Taser’ on him.

One officer tries to take the suspect’s hood off but fails to do so as the altercation continues.

The two officers seem to drag the man in opposite directions, with one taking his arm and the other wrapping himself around his waist.

Eventually they get him close to the ground and an officer takes a small item out of his pocket.

But after the suspect makes another bid to escape, almost getting to his feet again, the police react and one accidentally kicks the object along the pavement.

Another item falls out of the man’s pocket, but by this point he has managed to get himself up.

The officer’s baton then falls loose and in the ensuing chaos the suspect grabs it and starts wielding it against the duo.

One appears to be struck with the weapon and falls to the ground, seemingly injured, as the other stands over him to protect him from being attacked again.

The suspect waves the baton once again, giving him enough time to hop onto what seems to be a high-powered e-bike and speed off, evading the uninjured officer’s flailing arms.

At the end of the video, the officer appears to speak into his radio to request an ambulance for his colleague.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: ‘We’re investigating an incident on Soho Road, Birmingham, and want to speak to Mahroy Stephenson.
