Mike Vrabel celebrates birthday with surprise guest at Patriots camp as coach looks to move on from Dianna Russini scandal

The New England Patriots surprised head coach Mike Vrabel on his birthday with a special appearance from a celebrity fan of the team.

Vrabel, who coached a preseason game on Thursday night, has dealt with plenty of peering eyes this offseason as a scandal involving his alleged affair with NFL reporter Dianna Russini captured national attention.

But on Friday, Vrabel experienced a more welcome surprise when Patriots owner Robert Kraft and the rest of the squad put together a quick birthday celebration.

Kraft invited some players to the front of the team’s meeting room where they were joined by team mascot Pat Patriot.

The owner led the team in a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ that Vrabel, now 51, appreciated and applauded.

Then, in a shock twist, Pat Patriot lifted his head off to reveal the man beneath the costume: rock icon Jon Bon Jovi.

Vrabel got a kick out of the reveal before going to the front and thanking Kraft and the rocker.

Despite being from New Jersey, the ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ singer has long been a fan of the Patriots and has been gifted two Super Bowl rings.

‘I’m the biggest Pats fan, God bless you all, [have] a great season, I’m looking forward to it,’ the rock star told the team.

Vrabel’s 50th year had been a tough one both professionally and personally.

On the field, the first-year Patriots head coach led New England to an appearance in Super Bowl LX. However, the Patriots were overwhelmed and lost to the Seattle Seahawks.

Then, the scandal involving Russini broke when the New York Post published suggestive photos of Vrabel and Russini together by themselves at an adults-only retreat in Arizona.

Since then, more photos of the pair in various settings emerged in various outlets, including when the Daily Mail published photos of the two on a boat in Tennessee in 2021.

While the married Russini has denied any wrongdoing and stood by her reporting on Vrabel, she was later placed on leave at The Athletic before ultimately submitting her resignation to the website’s parent company, The New York Times.

Nearly four months on, Vrabel was asked about the family therapy sessions the coach underwent in an attempt to save his marriage to his wife, Jen.

On Tuesday, an ESPN reporter asked: ‘What did you learn from that counseling and how did you balance that personal commitment with getting ready for this season?’

Vrabel replied: ‘I think we always look at improvement. As we talk about getting ready for the next season, we always look at improvement and ways that we can improve individually and how we can improve as a team.

‘It’s really critical that we continue to do that, on and off the field. I believe in that. I believe in everything we can do to help this football team, to help our coaches, to help myself and everybody else included.’

He added: ‘This journey that we’re going to go on is going to be completely different than the one we went on last year. That’s all of our jobs to prepare for it now.’

The previously embattled head coach continued by suggesting he is ‘really focused on our improvement individually and as a team.’
