Mahershala Ali Takes Shots on Marvel Over ‘Blade’ Movie Being Shelved

Mahershala Ali has officially closed the chapter on Marvel’s troubled vampire hunter reboot Blade to embrace a surprisingly soulful action project instead. The 2019-announced Marvel Cinematic Universe Blade
reboot endured repeated script rewrites, director exits including Bassam Tariq,
and was pulled from Disney’s official calendar in 2024 amid creative
disagreements over its unique vision. Now, the two-time Oscar-winning actor is
setting the record straight about stepping away from the superhero franchise.

The cancelled comic book adaptation paved the way for an
empowering creative collaboration.

In the GQ Interview published on July 31, 2026, Mahershala
Ali addressed the cancellation of the superhero project
Blade directly,
clarifying that studio executives held ultimate authority over production
timelines. He noted that despite holding a contractual agreement, the studio
chose not to proceed with filming.

“Again, you (Marvel) had me under contract; they have
billions of dollars; if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the
movie. So we’re not doing the movie,” said Ali to GQ. Consequently, the actor
remains content, leaving lingering questions regarding the cancelled production
to executive decision-makers.

“But I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those
questions are for them (Marvel). They didn’t want to do it, so they should
answer that question,” he added.

GQ interview of Ali confirms that the collapse of the superhero movie allowed director Bassam
Tariq the necessary time and energy to develop a fresh narrative. Tariq wrote
an original drama titled
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother and
re-approached the acclaimed performer. This unexpected alignment permitted both
creators to collaborate on an entirely independent cinematic venture.

The long-term career wisdom guided the acclaimed actor
toward deeply resonant original story choices.

Mahershala Ali’s career perspective and choosing original narratives

Reflecting on nearly 3 decades of professional acting
experience, Mahershala Ali shared his core philosophical perspective regarding
career opportunities in the same GQ Interview. He believes that projects
destined for an artist will naturally come to fruition, while others simply are
not meant for him, as
Blade did not proceed further.

“No offense to them. I’ve been doing this professionally for
pushing 30 years now, and one thing I’ve learned is that what is for you is for
you and what is not is not.” He said. His latest feature,
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,
perfectly aligns with this personal artistic vision. Moving past franchise
blockbusters has ultimately redirected his talents toward projects carrying
genuine emotional significance.
