Lenovo’s newest IdeaPad sure is bright


I reviewed a laptop from the IdeaPad lineup earlier this year, and I came away very impressed. While a lot of people like to gravitate toward the high-end laptops that can handle heavy workflow and LLMs, I only need one for word processing and web browsing. Although that’s not a difficult task for many laptops, I still like to have some luxuries. I like having a comfortable keyboard, a modestly sized screen with a touch screen doesn’t hurt, and I appreciate having a modest amount of RAM — something that’s important for those 50 Google Chrome tabs you leave open.

The Lenovo IdeaPad lineup checks these boxes for me, and the next refresh of the line, called the IdeaPad Vibe, will add more customization options on top of that. A lot of laptops, most of them, really, don’t get you much in the way of visual flair, but nobody told the IdeaPad laptops that. There are a total of seven different colors to pick from — Dreamy Violet, Spicy Gold, Zen Green, Chill Blue, Radiant Coral, Moody Blue, and Lowkey Grey — so you can certainly find something that fits what you’re looking for.

The purpose of the IdeaPad lineup is to appeal to a wide range of people, and these colorways are a great path toward doing that. Price is also a key factor, and while these aren’t dirt cheap like some other laptops you can find, they still come in at well under $1,000. You have your pick of an AMD Ryzen powered laptop or a Snapdragon one, and both start at $700. The AMD laptop releases first beginning in October while the Snapdragon ones don’t hit the market until November. Intel-powered IdeaPad Vibes will be announced at a later date.

On top of the different colorways, Lenovo offers customizable keycaps that you can swap out and replace for some added flair. While customization may be the main appeal here, there’s more to get excited about.

Disappointingly, if you want an OLED screen, you’re locked into the Lowkey Grey or Moody Blue colors. This is something you’ll want if you value picture quality on your laptop above all use. Those brighter brights and darker darks really look great on an OLED. If you want the snappy performance that a 120hz screen can offer, then the IPS screen is what you want.

Something many laptops fall victim to today is a lack of ports. It doesn’t feel like it was too long ago that laptops had all the connectivity you could need, but as they’ve gotten slimmer and slimmer, it’s come at the expense of ports. This is something that plagues all technology, so I shouldn’t just single out laptops. The IdeaPad Vibe lineup bucks that trend because it comes with a pair of SSD slots, several USB-A and USB-C ports, and HDMI ports, a MicroSD card reader, and a headphone jack.

What’s nice about this is that it’s still rather lightweight at just under three pounds, so lugging this around in a backpack won’t be too uncomfortable. Each IdeaPad Vibe model comes with either a 14 or 15 inch display, so you have your pick of something more compact or something roomier.

Keep in mind that this laptop appeals to the everyday user instead of somebody looking for their laptop to handle video editing and heavy workloads. If you’re like me and spend most of your time on a laptop watching videos, surfing the web, or writing new stories, then the IdeaPad Vibe fits that niche well. I don’t need my laptops to do a whole lot since I have a powerful desktop PC for any heavy lifting I need — although that pretty much means gaming in my case.

I appreciate that the IdeaPad Vibe delivers an out-of-the-box experience that’ll be sure to impress a wide range of people. The fact that you don’t need to connect a third-party USB-C hub is icing on the cake. I would hate for somebody to buy a new laptop only to find that it doesn’t have the necessary ports to connect everything they want. I’m still one of those people who relies on a USB-A dongle to connect my mouse to a laptop, so it’s nice to see the IdeaPad offer that for me.

It’s cool to see a laptop that appeals to the average person actually appeals to the average person. Somebody who just has general needs like plugging in a flash drive every now and then or putting an SD card into their laptop to transfer pictures will find a lot to enjoy with an IdeaPad. I’m glad that a laptop like this exists on the market, and I can definitely see myself writing future stories like this one on the Spicy Gold variant.
