MLB fans have ripped into Patti LaBelle’s ‘disrespectful’ performance of the national anthem ahead of the All-Star Game on Tuesday evening.
The 82-year-old took to the stage ahead of the first pitch at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, where she performed a unique rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner.
The ‘Godmother of Soul’ put her own twist on the national anthem, which proved divisive among fans – who rushed to social media to make their feelings known.
Responding to a clip of LaBelle’s performance, one disgruntled user on X said: ‘It was horrible. Completely disrespectful to our anthem’.
Another wrote: ‘That was terrible, couldn’t bring back the singer from yesterday?? What an embarrassment for the troops who fight for the country’.
Similarly one fan said: ‘Patti LaBelle is one of our greatest singers, however why people think they have to add their own twist to the National Anthem boggles my mind. Leave it alone. It was not meant to be sung with runs or ‘making it your own’.’

However, there were still some fans online who appreciated the unique twist.
At the end of her performance, red and white fireworks burst out into the sky, as the thousands of fans packed inside Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, applauded.
After she was done, a military flyover soared across the skyline.
