Kristi Noem suggest which agency Donald Trump might shut down next as she threatens firings at DHS

Ever since Donald Trump decided to completely shut down USAID last week, federal government workers have feared that their job could also be on the chopping block.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem sparked those concerns on Sunday when she suggested that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) could be the next to go.

Approximately 10,000 people lost their jobs last week when Trump’s ‘first buddy’ Elon Musk shuttered the United States Agency for International Development.

And roughly 40,000 others from across federal agencies opted to take Trump’s ‘voluntary buyout’ offer to leave their government jobs but be paid through September.

Trump said that he will have Musk also begin examining this week the Departments of Education and Defense for areas of potential savings.

And Noem suggests that FEMA, the agency responsible for federal emergency relief and aid, is also on the list.

‘If the president came to you and said, you’re my DHS secretary, do you think I should get rid of FEMA, what would you say?’ CNN host Dana Bash asked Noem during an interview on State of the Union.

‘I would say, yes, get rid of FEMA the way it exists today,’ the former South Dakota Governor replied.

‘We still need the resources and the funds and the finances to go to people that have these types of disasters like Hurricane Helene and the fires in California,’ she slightly walked-back. ‘But you need to let the local officials make the decisions on how that is deployed, so it can be deployed much quicker.’

‘We don’t need this bureaucracy that’s picking and choosing winners,’ the DHS Secretary said.

Noem talked on Sunday about the potential of cutting down the rest of the DHS force, as well.

She said the agency is not reliant on a ‘large’ workforce, just one that is committed to the mission and doing their jobs to the best of their abilities.

‘We’re going to start going through who is fulfilling their mission and who isn’t, and be removing those that aren’t committed to keeping America safe,’ Noem insisted.

‘The mission of DHS is to secure the American homeland,’ she added. ‘That’s virtually every person who comes into this country and leaves this country, every product that comes into this country or leaves through our ports or other mechanisms, and also cybersecurity – so anything that happens on the Internet and goes into the country or out of the country.’

‘So the jurisdiction of DHS is large, but I don’t think that the number of people determines our success,’ the DHS Secretary explained. ‘It’s how much they’re committed to doing their job and doing it with excellence.’

DHS is a huge focus of Trump’s administration as he has charged the Department with rounding up illegal immigrants within the country and transporting them for deportation.
