Kathryn Newton shared a status update on the possibility of a Big Little Lies season 3, revealing she is “really hopeful” a new season will become a reality.
The star caught up with PEOPLE exclusively at the premiere of her new Prime Video action-thriller, The Devil’s Mouth, in Culver City, Calif., on July 28.
During the conversation, Newton, 29, said she remains optimistic about a third installment of the hit HBO series.

“I’m really, really, really, really hopeful,” she told PEOPLE exclusively. “I think good things. I think good things about Big Little Lies season 3.”
“I would love that for all of us,” she added.
Newton played Abigail Carlson on the show, the teenage daughter of Madeline Mackenzie (Reese Witherspoon), which initially premiered in 2017 for a seven-episode run.
The popular series premiered its second season — which brought on Meryl Streep — in 2019 for another seven episodes.
The series also starred Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Zoë Kravitz.
Witherspoon, 50, who executive produced the series in addition to starring in it, previously confirmed that season 3 was “in process,” during a June 22 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
“I feel like you’re telling the truth,” Fallon responded, as Witherspoon confirmed, “I am telling the truth.”

In April, series creator David E. Kelley provided an update on the status of a potential new season while speaking to PEOPLE during the New York City premiere of his new Apple TV show, Margo’s Got Money Troubles.
“We’re getting the band back together, and it should be a good run again,” he said, adding that he’s “not allowed” to reveal anything else.
Kelley previously indicated that a new season would hopefully eventually be underway, telling PEOPLE in June 2025 that while none of the show’s main stars were “under contract” yet, “everyone is very committed to it.”
While speaking to PEOPLE at her recent movie premiere, Newton also shared that she’s been fangirling out over one of her former Big Little Lies costars from afar.
“I’ve been enjoying Elle,” she said of the Witherspoon-produced Prime Video prequel series that follows her Legally Blonde character, Elle Woods, during her high school days.
“I’m really blown away by Reese Witherspoon and what she’s done, bringing Elle Woods back into our lives,” Newton continued.

“I think it’s something that the next generation of young Elle Woods fan can appreciate and hopefully love as much as I loved Elle Woods — and revisit Reese Witherspoon’s iconic Elle Woods,” she added.
Newton’s latest project, The Devil’s Mouth, is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
