Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Grounds has tapped Julianne Moore to star in Netflix’s mother-daughter comedy. Moore’s last venture with the streaming giant was the recent incisive, dark comedy limited series Sirens, which was a massive success for the platform. The tense psychological drama with absurd dark humor became a global phenomenon despite getting mixed reviews. Now, the actress is looking to replicate the success with another Netflix project.

But this time it is a plain old comedy and will be backed by the Obamas’ Higher Ground.

Julianne Moore and the Obamas’ Higher Ground set for new Netflix film

According to an exclusive by Variety, Oscar winner Julianne Moore is making progress as executive producer and star of a new comedic film with Netflix, following a succession of serious roles. The production company that Barack and Michelle Obama formed, Higher Ground, is behind the untitled project. 

It centers on a mother (Moore) who becomes alarmed when her daughter is given a promotion that would require her to go across the nation. In an attempt to keep her kid at home, she goes into overdrive in search of the perfect romantic companion. It is billed as a multigenerational tale in the style of Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Julianne Moore, who has recently spoken about her newfound aversion to screen violence, most recently appeared in Todd Haynes’ subversive black comedy May December, Pedro Almodóvar’s debut English-language feature, The Room Next Door, and Brad Ingelsby’s Echo Valley. She will next appear in Cry to Heaven, Tom Ford’s much-awaited third feature picture.

While one of the main characters of the film has been locked with Julianne Moore’s arrival, there are others that the makers still need to recruit.

According to one insider, the ensemble cast will consist of four lead characters, three of which will be finalized in the next few days. Maggie Sheridan, who most recently worked as executive story editor on the third season of Maya Rudolph’s Loot on Apple and Universal Television, has joined as the writer for the script. 

Julianne Moore, besides starring in the movie, will also executive produce the comedy. Additionally, the movie is being produced by Anikah McLaren of Higher Ground. Anyhow, the initial details of the project look promising, and it seems like Netflix is following up on its newfound fancy for high-concept romantic comedies.
