According to Deadline, the acclaimed short film titled I
Got My Brother is now available to stream globally on the Los Angeles Times
digital platforms as of June 19, 2026. This highly anticipated debut aligns
perfectly with national emancipation celebrations and marks a significant
milestone for the production team. The poignant project previously captured
widespread industry attention after winning the prestigious audience award at
the South by Southwest festival.

The narrative unfolds as an intimate conversation between
siblings Jarrett Harper and Baylon Harper as they recount their shared history.
Director Victor Gabriel beautifully blends harsh memories of childhood neglect
in Los Angeles with distinct elements of magical realism.

“As a filmmaker and licensed therapist who has been doing
community therapy in Compton, Watts, and South Central, I wanted to invite
audiences into Jarrett and Baylon’s healing journey,” Gabriel said to Deadline.
This unique stylistic choice allows the project to navigate deep trauma while
maintaining a surprising sense of hope.

The emotional core of the film intensifies as the siblings
recount the ultimate test of their familial relationship. At just 17 years old,
Jarrett received a sentence of life without parole after protecting his brother
by k****** their a*****. The historical release date beautifully commemorates
exactly seven years since Jarrett finally achieved his physical liberation from
prison, as mentioned by Deadline.

According to the same Deadline source, executive producer John
Legend initially met Jarrett Harper during a transformative advocacy visit to
Lancaster Prison back in 2015. Legend noted that despite enduring nearly two
decades of incarceration, the young man completely refused to let a bleak
environment extinguish his spirit.

“He had already spent nearly two decades inside, and even
in a place built to take away a person’s hope, I saw a man who refused to be
defined by the worst thing he had survived,” he recalled of the encounter. The entertainer
subsequently utilized his resource company, Get Lifted Film Co., to actively
campaign for the legal freedom of the inmate.

The successful advocacy campaign eventually led Governor
Jerry Brown to commute the severe sentence before Governor Gavin Newsom
finalized the release. Since returning to society, Harper has completely
transformed his past suffering into a clear community blueprint by mentoring
vulnerable children.

The production represents a collaborative effort featuring
producers Rachel Earnest, Ben Proudfoot, and Josh Rosenberg alongside the
