And in all honesty, no matter how much coaching you get, no matter how much advice you absorb, no matter how much effort you put in, there may be times in your job search where you’re going to struggle.
Now, I’m a sports fan. And one of the things I learned a long time ago, is that there’s an edge that winning teams have over teams that are not winning teams.
And one of the advantages that winning teams have is that they’ve learned that winners will find a way to win and that losers will find a way to lose.
Now, how does this apply to you? One of the things that teams seem to do over and over again, the losing teams, is they keep doing the same thing.They keep methodically trying to to defeat the winning team without that sort of emotional energy to them, without that ability to get themselves revved up in a powerful, aggressive way that a champion is.
Hey, I don’t care which sport you like. I don’t care which team you like. You know what your athlete is like when they walk off the field and they’ve won. You know their behavior when that final slice overhead is hit at a major tennis match, and that person just drops to the ground with exhaustion and exhilaration, ’cause they’ve given their all. Is that what you’re really doing in your job search? Of course not.
You need to perform like great athletes perform, putting in full effort, maximum effort, passion, drive, the willingness to give it all even if you lose. Because at times you are going to lose. At times you are not going to be successful. Sending out that wonderfully crafted resume that you and maybe your resume writer have worked on for hours, it just doesn’t connect.
But I will tell you, if overall you engage in your search with drive, passion, joy, effort, and 100%, 110%, whatever that high number is for you, and not 30%, 40%—and you know what I’m talking about when I’m when I’m quoting these numbers. You know the difference between you at peak performance and you just going through the motions.
You need to operate at peak to reach into an organization, develop relationships with people that they’re going to want to refer you to that firm. You’re going to be wanting to operate at peak on your interviews so the people look at you and go, “Wow, that guy is a force of nature. I’d love to have this guy around. I’d love to have this woman around.”
So, don’t play small. Play like a champion.
Because again, I’m going to repeat it one more time: Winners find the way to win, losers find the way to lose. And one of the reasons that winners find the way to win is that they know that losers will find the way to lose.
