“It’s So Rewarding”- Charlize Theron Finds a Bigger Message in ‘The Odyssey’s Theater Buzz

The Hollywood industry has been grappling with an ongoing box office crisis in recent years. However, two massive releases this year, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey, have offered some hope for theatrical moviegoing, proving that audiences are still interested in the big-screen experience. Charlize Theron, who played the emotional nymph Calypso in The Odyssey, recently reflected on this very phenomenon and what Christopher Nolan’s film has demonstrated.

Charlize Theron sees The Odyssey as a reminder that audiences still have a strong interest in going to the movies, despite the growing concerns surrounding the declining box office.

Charlize Theron seems hopeful post The Odyssey

Charlize Theron recently attended the annual block party of the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Program, where she spoke about The Odyssey’s massive hype at the theaters. The actress told The Hollywood Reporter that the film’s box office business is proof that people still cherish a cinematic spectacle on the big screens if it is worthwhile.

“It’s so rewarding to see that people do want to go to the theaters”.

“They do want to go and see movies, and if we were ever questioning it, we shouldn’t anymore,” she added to THR. Theron also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the future of moviegoing, particularly with the boom of streaming services. She hoped that the Christopher Nolan movie would not be the only theatrical event in the coming days.

She also called The Odyssey “the best party in town” while speaking to Variety elsewhere at the event.

Despite The Odyssey’s strong box office performance, the industry is still struggling to sustain that level of interest among theatergoers.

The reality of Hollywood box office

Hollywood celebrated a massive summer this year by bringing in a record-breaking $4.76 billion in domestic revenue, thanks to billion-dollar mega-hits like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey. However, theaters did significantly increase ticket prices and pushed audiences toward premium formats like IMAX.

While theatrical grosses for major blockbusters have roughly doubled in nominal terms since the 1970s, production and marketing budgets have ballooned seven times faster.

When adjusted for inflation, actual summer revenue is down 17% compared to 2019. Through mid-August, domestic ticket sales dropped by 30% compared to 2019 levels, meaning roughly 248 million missing admissions. Nonetheless, with Dunesday on the horizon, there is still hope that it could give the box office another much-needed boost.
