If you cast your mind back to the nineties, you’ll remember that floppy disks were, in fact, not floppy — at least not on the outside. Rather, the flat, circular magnetic disks that contained data were encapsulated within a hard plastic protective shell, adding rigidity to the format.
Likewise, several niche optical disc formats from back in the day were protected by an outer shell, including the cult classic MiniDisc (MD) and the adorably miniature Universal Media Disc (UMD). A built-in case makes a lot of sense, logically speaking, as it prevents undue wear and tear on the sensitive data side of a given disc.
With this in mind, it’s peculiar that every mainstream optical disc format to have ever hit the scene has been designed without a protective shell to call its own. Whether we’re talking about CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, or 4K UHD discs, the trend is the same: the disc itself is exposed to the elements, rather than being enveloped within a protective layer.
Why mainstream optical disc formats don’t come with a protective shell
CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K UHD discs all lack a built-in casing
At first, I assumed optical disc formats lacked a built-in protective outer layer for technical reasons. Optical lasers work without physical contact with a disc, but it does require reading data through a clear plastic layer. Perhaps, then, a shell might block out or distort the light beam used to actually read data.
Of course, this theory doesn’t hold water — not when MiniDisc and UMD have both proven that encapsulated optical media formats can be a viable solution without any impairment to read and write capabilities. So, then, what gives? Why don’t CDs et al. come with their own floppy disk-style covers?
The answer, by and large, comes down to manufacturing costs. A bare disc is cheaper to produce than an enveloped disc, and this factor mattered quite a bit when CDs and DVDs were still new (and expensive) propositions on the market. Plus, with how fast discs spin within players, internal shells would have had to be produced to exacting (and more pricey) specifications as to not raddle, create balancing issues, or produce friction.
The answer, by and large, comes down to manufacturing costs.
To save on costs, manufacturers instead relied on jewel cases for CDs and disc cases for DVDs, which kept things safe and secure during transit and while stored at home. Of course, scratches and fingerprints became a mainstay on these formats due to a lack of a permanently adhered shell, which could sometimes impact playback. Thankfully, it’s possible to polish out basic scratches, as I’ve covered in a separate piece right here on Pocket-lint.
By the time the Blu-ray disc format arrived on the scene in the mid-2000s, anti-scratch coating layers became standard to reduce the incidence of damaged discs. Modern Blu-rays and 4K UHD discs, then, are relatively immune to basic scratches, negating much of the need for a dedicated protective outer shell.
In a perfect world, I’d have loved to have seen CDs and DVDs ship with a built-in protective layer. I have one too many scratched-up mixtapes in my collection that would’ve been spared damage had the specification included an enveloping case. If nothing else, I’m just glad that the market eventually sidestepped the issue by the time Blu-ray came around with its innovative scratch-resistant optical disc coating.
