Not many people would dare brush off a note from a former U.S. president. Larry David, however, is not most people. While filming HBO’s Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, the comedy legend found himself in a hilarious back-and-forth with Barack Obama, proving that even the Oval Office has no authority once the cameras start rolling.

Larry David’s response to Barack Obama left the set in stitches

Recalling the moment to Variety, director Jeff Schaffer revealed that Barack Obama had offered a creative note while filming Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, only for Larry David to casually brush it aside with, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, we got it.” Amused by the response, Obama jokingly reminded David that even as President of the United States, he always listened to his advisors. True to form, David fired back with the perfect one-liner: “Yeah, but I’m the president of this,” instantly turning the exchange into one of the production’s funniest behind-the-scenes moments.

“The president said, ‘When I was in the Oval Office, I took advice and listened to my advisors, and I was the president of the United States.’ And Larry just goes, ‘Yeah, but I’m the president of this,’” director Jeff Schaffer told Variety.

Although Curb Your Enthusiasm concluded its celebrated 24-year run in 2024, longtime collaborator Jeff Schaffer never believed Larry David was finished with television. After working alongside David from Seinfeld to Curb, Schaffer always expected the comedy icon to return with another project, as he revealed to Variety. That prediction has now come full circle with Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, reuniting the duo for yet another offbeat comedy.

And while Larry David’s exchange with Barack Obama may have stolen the spotlight, the series itself is just as unconventional, reimagining some of America’s biggest historical moments.

Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness premiered on June 26, 2026, as a seven-episode HBO limited series created by Larry David and Jeff Schaffer. Released weekly on Fridays, the comedy imagines an alternate version of American history where Larry’s famously cynical personality derails iconic historical events through petty arguments, social blunders, and painfully awkward encounters. Framed around America’s 250th anniversary, the series humorously suggests that Barack and Michelle Obama set out to celebrate the nation’s history before Larry David completely hijacked the project.

Beyond Larry David, the series features an impressive lineup of Hollywood stars and longtime collaborators. Barack and Michelle Obama serve as executive producers through Higher Ground, while guest appearances include Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Hader, Jon Hamm, Sean Hayes, Kathryn Hahn, Jurnee Smollett, Vince Vaughn, Isla Fisher, Jane Krakowski, Susie Essman, Jeff Garlin, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
