Well, this is a fun question! How do you think it will work?
When You’ve Been Made Redundant, Fired, Laid Off, RIF’d
The work I do is as a career and leadership coach. I help people with job hunting, hiring more effectively, managing and leading, workplace related issues, executive coaching. You know, if it relates to the world of work, I’m really good.
This question I thought was fascinating. Can I tell an interviewer that I will use their offer to renegotiate my current salary first. You can do anything you want but if you think you’re gonna get an offer from that firm, you are absolutely wrong. You’re an imbecile. And I say that, because who would give you an offer, knowing that you’re not planning on accepting. You’re going to run back to your current firm, and go, ‘Hey, someone’s willing to pay me this. Beat it, beat it, beat it.’ No one’s gonna do that. And, as such, all you’re doing is talking yourself out of a job.
So don’t do it that way. If you’re going to do it, do it the way everyone else does–deceptively. Do it in the way that you receive the offer. And then as you resign, well, you can indicate what it would take for you to stay. And from there, your firm has a choice to either meet that number or not. And that’s the way you negotiate with your current firm.
Now, it’s really slimy to do that with an organization that with good intentions is trying to hire someone to solve a problem. But it’s your life and your choices. I’m not going to tell you that you’re wrong. Clearly, you’d like your current firm, but you want to make more money. And this is the way to do it, not the way you talked about.
