On a technical level, 4K UHD Blu-ray discs outclass their 1080p predecessors on all fronts. 4K UHD discs can store significantly more data per unit, movies and TV shows distributed on the format are of much higher resolution, and, oftentimes, the most advanced spatial audio and high dynamic range (HDR) technologies are exclusive to it.
Even with these factors in mind, however, I continue to prefer the standard Blu-ray format over its 4K UHD successor. The reason for this is because, even though audiovisual fidelity plays a major role in my appreciation for 4K UHD, regular Blu-ray discs have it beat where it counts: in market penetration, ubiquity, price, and available content.
Blu-ray’s ubiquity matters

The 4K UHD Blu-ray format has suffered from a rocky market stance ever since its introduction in 2016, owing to the contemporary proliferation of streaming services. 4K Ultra HD streaming, in fact, has been around longer than the 4K UHD home media format, launching on Netflix as early as 2014.
As a result of streaming’s early and astronomical rise in popularity, 4K UHD Blu-ray had the rug pulled out from under its optical media feet. Sure, 4K UHD has managed to carve out a physical media niche for itself, but its relative height is far less pronounced than that of the regular run-of-the-mill Blu-ray disc format.
Blu-ray, then, benefits from an abundance of content on a far greater scale and scope than 4K UHD Blu-ray.
Blu-ray, on the other hand, released in 2006, and it therefore had some time to penetrate the market prior to the influx of streaming services later in the 2000s. Because of this, Blu-ray has had the opportunity to become a near-ubiquitous media format, albeit to a lesser degree than DVD.
Blu-ray, then, benefits from an abundance of content on a far greater scale and scope than 4K UHD Blu-ray, even if the gap is slowly but surely shrinking with time. Chances are, if there’s a show or film you’re hoping to purchase physically, it’ll be readily available on Blu-ray, even if it hasn’t been pressed in the 4K UHD format.

Cheaper is better
Blu-ray prices have plummeted relative to 4K UHD
When Blu-ray first hit the scene in 2006, it was a rather expensive proposition. Thankfully, prices soon came down, and now Blu-ray discs and players can be had at an affordable rate. This same process has yet to occur in the 4K UHD space — while discs aren’t particularly expensive these days, players continue to be priced high (with ever more price hikes in sight).
In 2026, the average 4K UHD player will run you upwards of $300, and the average 4K UHD-clad home video game console will set you back approximately double that. Regular Blu-ray is simply the smarter buy, no matter how you break things down. You can get a Blu-ray player for under $100 these days, or a used Blu-ray-compatible gaming console for only slightly more.
In the meantime, I’ll continue to grow my collection of Blu-ray discs.
Needless to say, Blu-ray’s more affordable cost is a big reason why I continue to prefer the format over its direct successor. Based on precedent, I don’t envision 4K UHD players coming down in price in the near future, which is quite unfortunate. Unless prices on players substantially come down, I can’t imagine the 4K UHD format ever reaching Blu-ray’s ubiquity.
If and when the 4K UHD standard becomes, well, standard, I’ll certainly prefer it over regular Blu-ray. For better or worse, that time has yet to arrive, however. In the meantime, I’ll continue to grow my collection of Blu-ray discs, resting easy knowing that 4K UHD technology is backwards compatible with my favorite physical media format of all time.
