Liverpool fans wondering how Hugo Ekitike’s injury recovery is progressing got a visual update on Friday as he attended Wimbledon.

Ekitike suffered a ruptured right achilles during Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final exit by his former club, and eventual champions, Paris Saint-Germain on April 14.

The devastating injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season as well as France’s World Cup campaign – with Les Bleus in the semi-finals after beating Morocco 2-0 on Thursday. France supporters showed their support for the stricken striker by unveiling a banner that read ‘Courage Hugo’ during a 2-1 warm-up loss to the Ivory Coast last month in Nantes.

This type of injury can keep a player sidelined for up to 12 months, meaning there is a good chance the striker will miss the majority of next term too.

However, Reds supporters were able to see how he is progressing on Friday as he watched the tennis unfold at SW19.

Wearing a Dolce and Gabbana suit with a contrasting paisley-print tie, the 24-year-old was walking around the iconic Grand Slam with a cane aiding him before enjoying the action at the Wimbledon Suite.

Ekitike has spent the summer working out in Los Angeles with German physiotherapist Berengar Buschmann – who he knows well from his spell at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Last week, Buschmann uploaded a video on his Instagram account of Ekitike working out with him as the France international performed several different lower leg exercises. Routines in the swimming pool were also conducted as well as some light football drills with the recovering right leg.

And earlier this week, Buschmann also shared a video of Ekitike walking unaided – to both of their delights.

‘If you’ve ever worn a walking boot, you know this feeling. @hekitike,’ the caption of that post began.

‘Getting out of the boot is one milestone. Seeing your gait slowly become more natural is another.

‘The process continues. Every detail matters. Every progression is earned. Stay patient. Stay criteria-based.’

Before injury curtailed his season, Ekitike was a bright spark in a rather disappointing campaign for Liverpool – scoring 17 goals.

That tally was enough to see him finish as the club’s top goalscorer across 2025-26.
