Greenacre: Young man’s left hand is SEVERED by machete-wielding gang members during brutal home invasion

A young man has suffered ‘life-altering injuries’ after his hand was chopped off by a machete-wielding gang during a violent home invasion.

Four masked men forced their way into a home on Banksia Road in Greenacre in Sydney’s southwest about 2am on Saturday.

The 23-year-old man’s left hand was severed after he confronted the gang.

NSW Police Superintendent Rodney Hart told reporters: ‘At this point, the 23-year-old victim exited his bedroom and was confronted by the males.’

‘One of the males then struck him with what we believe to be a machete and severed his hand.

‘This is a brutal, violent attack, which is extremely traumatic for the family.

‘This young man will have received life-altering injuries.’

Paramedics and police arrived at the home to find the man suffering severe injuries to his left arm and rushed him to hospital.

He underwent surgery on Saturday morning and is expected to make a full recovery.

Superintendent Hart said four other people were inside the home at the time, including a man and woman in their 40s and two men aged 16 and 19.

All were uninjured.

He said the masked men threatened the injured man’s father and demanded cash.

‘They forced him back into the main bedroom where a safe was located, it was opened by the victim and a large sum of money has been stolen,’ Hart said.

The gang then drove off in a dark-coloured SUV before authorities arrived.

Superintendent Hart said the injured man and his family were not known to police and the incident did not appear to be related to organised crime.

However, police believe the house had been targeted.

‘They are a family who run a business in western Sydney, they’ve run that business for a number of years, they are very well-known in the community,’ Hart said.

‘This does appear to be a targeted home invasion where cash was the motive.

‘What we believe is that, somehow, these people were aware that there may have been cash on the premises, and that’s what’s been targeted.’

Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
