The developer of the popular

Grand Theft Auto series
, Rockstar Games, has officially delayed the release of its highly anticipated next-generation GTA VI title. The video game, which was originally slated for release in fall 2025, is now set to come out on May 26, 2026.

“With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve,” says Rockstar in a recent post on social media site X.

Rockstar Games’ parent company,

Take-Two
Interactive Software, who serves as the publisher of GTA series console games, is backing up the decision to delay the title. In a statement made via a press release, Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick writes: “We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations.”

Rockstar’s delay of Grand Theft Auto VI is unfortunate, but not entirely surprising. After dropping an initial teaser trailer back in December of last year, there has been a distinct lack of updates or additional gameplay showcased by the developer.

When it finally does release, Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to hit the ground running. The previous title in the series, GTA V, was released in 2013, and has since gone on to become one of the best-selling video games of all time.

While we now have an official release date for Grand Theft Auto VI (albeit a delayed one), it remains unclear when exactly the milestone title might launch on platforms like Steam on PC. Rockstar previously confirmed initial launch exclusivity for the

Sony PlayStation 5
and

Xbox Series X and S
home consoles. Whether a

Nintendo Switch 2
port of the game might be on the company’s roadmap is another question entirely.
