The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company has recalled 13 of its powdered beverage mixes due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The recall follows a separate milk powder recall initiated by California Dairies, Inc. due to concerns about potential contamination with the bacteria, which was used as an ingredient in the powdered beverage mixes, according to a notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and a press release from the company.

A list of the 13 powdered beverage mixes that were recalled, ranging from the 4/2lb. Premium Hot Cocoa Pouch Bulk to the 6/3.12lb White Chocolate Flavored Sweet Ground Powder, is available on the notice and press release.

While the affected beverage mixes were packaged in "large formats intended for food service and institutional customers," there is concern that some mixes may have been available for purchase to consumers through e-commerce platforms.

"Neither we, our third-party manufacturer nor the milk powder supplier have received reports of illness or injury related to this issue to date, and our own rigorous testing has not identified any impacted powdered beverage mixes," said Ghirardelli in a statement posted on its website.

"Nothing is more important to us than the safety and quality of our products, and we’re taking this step out of an abundance of caution," the statement continued.

Ghirardelli said in its statement that a "material share" of impacted powdered beverage mixes has been put on hold at its warehouse facilities.

In addition to staying in "close contact" with the FDA, the company is working with its partners to "return or dispose" of potentially impacted powdered beverage mixes.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA's notice and Ghirardelli's press release.

Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
