Physical media may be making a comeback, but the number of people buying Blu-ray and 4K UHD discs is a drop in the ocean compared to those who stream. I’m not saying physical media doesn’t have any benefits. I just think it’s more of a niche for enthusiasts than mainstream consumers.

So why is this? 4K Blu-rays offer better picture quality and you can keep it forever. There’s also no chance of it disappearing due to licensing issues. That said, here are five reasons why streaming is still the best choice for most people.

Convenience

Movies at the touch of a button

Streaming is much more convenient than buying and using physical media for most people. It’s as simple as switching on my TV, navigating to the streaming service and watching the movie I want. If I feel like watching the same movie on physical media, I’ll need to buy it first and wait for it to be delivered before enjoying it.

The same goes for movies I already own. The effort of looking through discs to find the right one, then putting the disc in the player back in its case seems like too much effort in the age of instant gratification.

I live in a country where discs aren’t widely available. The cost factor and length of time it takes them to reach me is infeasible for all but the few must-have movies.

There’s a clear winner

Physical discs usually cost $25 to $30 for Blu-ray and 4K UHDs of the latest titles. Older titles can be less at around $10 to $20, depending on the title. Streaming services start at around $10 to $30 a month, depending on the package and users, and I can watch unlimited shows and movies for a once-off fee.

Yes, I won’t own the media on streaming platforms. They still offer unbeatable value because I can access countless titles for the cost of a single movie.

Variety

More or less content

There are only so many physical discs a person can own, and you’ll never be able to keep up with all the newest releases. It can take years to amass a collection of just the movies and series you like.

Streaming services have a massive variety of content to choose from and regularly update their catalogs with new releases. The sheer volume of content means I can watch everything from movies and series to documentaries in one place. I also have the freedom to try things I wouldn’t normally like at no extra cost just to see what they’re about.

Multi-device compatibility

Watch across your devices

I only watch my physical discs on my main TV connected to a compatible player. I need to buy another player or move the existing one if I feel like watching the same disc on another TV or projector.

I don’t have this issue with streaming and can watch whatever I like on multiple devices wherever I am. I can start watching something on my main TV in the living room and continue it on my phone if I like. This unrivaled compatibility makes streaming a more practical and versatile choice for most people compared to physical discs.

Eventual obsolescence

It’s a matter of time

Just like DVDs and video cassettes before them, it’s just a matter of time until the current generation of physical media becomes obsolete. I still have a few old cassettes and DVDs in a box somewhere that I hold onto for sentimental value, but the idea of trying to watch them never crosses my mind.

It’s inevitable that Blu-ray and 4K UHD discs will eventually be preceded by something better, whether it’s another type of disc-based technology or a move to digital. When that day comes, there’s a good chance your expensive collection will collect dust while you move on to the next best thing.

It depends

The numbers don’t lie, and casual viewers usually prefer streaming because it’s easier, more cost-effective and practical than buying discs and requiring a dedicated player.

Physical discs still have their place but have become a niche for enthusiasts and collectors. Streaming can’t beat the feeling of owning your own copy of a movie and enjoying its superior picture quality without needing an internet connection. It might not be the best choice for everyone, but it’s still a way of preserving art and building a tangible collection you can be proud of.

There’s no need to stick to one or the other when you can have the best of both worlds. I stream most of my content, but still buy physical copies of my favorite movies and shows that I love and plan on rewatching again later.
