Everything you need to know before its big return

After a year-long wait, Reacher is returning this month with its highly anticipated fourth season. This next batch of episodes is based on the 13th book in Lee Child’s global best-selling series, Gone Tomorrow. Season 4 will continue the action-packed, high-stakes storytelling that has made the show a worldwide hit.

Recently, Alan Ritchson teased that the new season unfolds at a faster pace than previous seasons, telling fans that if it were any more high-octane, people would need a heart-health test before watching. While season 4 will have that air of Reacher familiarity, it will also be radically different, fraught with plenty of action, mystery, peril, and, of course, just enough of that sardonic Reacher humor we all know and love. By the looks of the trailer, it seems the creators have checked all the boxes.

Here’s everything you need to know about Reacher season 4, plus a little something extra.

Reacher season 4 unfolds around a big mystery

A traumatic event kicks off this season’s story

Reacher season 4 shifts the urban landscape from the source material’s original New York City backdrop to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where the man-mountain is thrust right into a bizarre conspiracy. After a chance encounter goes horribly wrong, Reacher is drawn into a complex and deadly game that pits him against ruthless foes from the highest echelons of power.

The plot kicks off when he meets a troubled woman on the subway. Noticing that she is exhibiting all the signs of a suicide bomber, he makes a grave miscalculation and tries to de-escalate the situation. To his dismay, the woman pulls a gun from her bag, not a bomb, and shoots herself right in front of him. Reacher’s misinterpretation of the entire scene is a critical moment that not only creates season 4’s narrative but also pulls the lone wolf into a far-reaching conspiracy involving powerful politicians, old wars, and, of course, extremists. While the former investigator is familiar with missions of this nature, he is not used to battling the guilt he feels at potentially causing an innocent woman’s death.

If the plot of season four closely follows the book, viewers can expect things to reach the pinnacle of violence by the story’s end. We only thought we’d seen what that looked like in season 3’s brutal brawl between Reacher and Paulie (Olivier Richters), which saw both men beat the ever-loving snot out of each other with their fists, a garden rake, a shovel, an avalanche of bagged lawn seed, ropes, and a machine gun. It was nearly a full 10 minutes of gritty, adrenaline-fueled, edge-of-your-seat action that left fans craving more. Now, it looks like that’s exactly what we’re getting.

The season 4 trailer tells us quite a bit about what to expect in addition to the subway incident, including plenty of fistfights and witty quips. In one scene, we see Reacher attacking a guard through what looks like a makeshift cage in a holding area. In another, we see an intimate moment between Reacher and season 4 villain Lila (Agnez Mo). There’s also a moment where he and a new homicide detective discover they are wanted by multiple law enforcement agencies. Why does this matter? Because it means he’ll have to go rogue, and since he’s already an unaffiliated drifter, it suggests that the conspiracy he’s up against is bigger than anything we’ve seen up to this point.

Who’s involved in the Reacher season 4 cast?

Expect eight new additions

Obviously, Ritchson is returning as Jack Reacher, a role he has played since the series first premiered on Prime Video in 2022. Maria Sten is also returning as Frances Neagley, alongside Anthony Michael Hall, Sonya Cassidy, Brian Tee, Johnny Berchtold, Robert Montesinos, Daniel David Stewart, and Olivier Richters.

Eight new cast members are also on board for the season, including Sydelle Noel (Glow), who joins as homicide detective Tamara Green and teams up with Reacher. Additionally, Kevin Corrigan (Grounded for Life) joins as Detective Docherty, pop superstar Agnez Mo as Lila Hoth, pop superstar Anggun as Amisha Hoth, Kevin Weisman (Marvel’s Runaways) as Russell Plum, Marc Blucas (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as John Samson, Kathleen Robertson (Murder in the First) as Elsbeth Samson, and Christopher Marquette (Strong Medicine) as Jacob Merrick.

Marquette replaces Jay Baruchel, who backed out of season 4 to tend to a personal matter. However, Prime Video recently announced that Baruchel will return for Reacher season five, which will be based on the 20th novel by Child in the Reacher series, Make Me.
