Every Year After Star on Pressure to Achieve Off Campus Success

Every Year After‘s Abigail Cowen weighed in on the pressure for the show to achieve the same success as Prime Video’s breakout hit Off Campus.

In Us Weekly‘s exclusive clip from the Tuesday, June 16, episode of Tommy DiDario‘s “I’ve Never Said This Before” podcast, Cowen, 28, addressed the way book-to-TV adaptations such as The Summer I Turned Pretty, Heated Rivalry and Off Campus have dominated the screen.

“We’re human so obviously, yes [there is pressure],” Cowen, who plays Delilah, shared. “You put so much effort into it and we have such an incredible fan base of the book.”

The actress acknowledged how overwhelming it can be, adding, “You want to do it justice so there is that built-in … I want to say pressure but it’s more a responsibility that you’ve been honored to have. But of course, I just want the fans to be happy. We’re doing it for them and also even hopefully, a wider audience.”

Based on Every Summer After by Carley Fortune, Every Year After follows Percy (Sadie Soverall), who grew up vacationing in Barry’s Bay and spending all her time with the Florek brothers: Sam (Matt Cornett) and Charlie (Michael Bradway).

“I just hope that [fans] respond to it because I’ve been a fan of books before and went and saw the adaptation. I’ve been in the shoes of a fan,” Cowen continued. “I definitely take it seriously but one can only hope. You do the job and then I’ve kind of learned to just let it go.”

In addition to introducing new characters, Every Year After surprised Us with some massive book shakeups. While Cowen’s character had an established presence in Fortune’s novel, she still got to help the character evolve on screen.

“I’m just reminding myself personally that this is an adaptation. We’re not doing word for word,” she noted. “There are different story lines. There are different kind of twists and turns in the show. Everyone when they read a book sees the character differently anyways.”

She continued: “It’s gonna be different than what you saw completely on the page. And you have creative liberty. We’re doing it a little bit different and we’re trying to make the fans happy. I hope they’re happy.”

Fortune, for her part, recently spoke to Us about her wish to have more seasons of the show.

“I really would love to see a second season of the show. They’re not quite there yet and I think because Sam is still kind of getting his head around what’s happened, that makes a lot of sense,” Fortune, 42, said of the ending. “I love how the show ends with a very clear set up for bringing One Golden Summer into the second season, which I’m most excited about.”

Every Year After is currently streaming on Prime Video.
