England swept Pakistan with an eight-wicket victory in Birmingham to clinch a comfortable 3-0 series win on Saturday.

Emilio Gay: 5/10

Endured a difficult second series as a Test cricketer, in matches where the balance of power lay with the ball, but showed some mettle by digging in for a half century in the first innings at Edgbaston, just as the debate about his shelf life was whipping up. 5

Jordan Cox: 7/10

Has displayed levels of versatility that ensure an England future: this series has not only shown him to be a competent replacement for Jacob Bethell at No 3, but also an able deputy with the wicketkeeping gloves, giving him an advantage in future squad selections over another fill-in gloveman Ollie Pope.

Joe Root: 6.5/10 

A reputation for being one of the game’s great problem solvers needs to be lived up to, fast. Discounting a run out, each of the England captain’s last eight dismissals has been leg before wicket. Pakistan’s medium-paced seamers feasted on his weakness to balls nipping back into the stumps. Lacked clarity when Pakistan’s tail wagged this week.

Harry Brook: 7.5/10

Threw away the chance of a first hundred in 13 months with an ill-judged call for a single in Birmingham, but his overall demeanour bodes well. Brook is at his most valuable to the team when playing the situation in front of him and batting for the close on day one was a positive sign at the start of the post-Bazball era.

Dan Lawrence: 7/10

Determined to ensure a fourth life as an England player is more than a fleeting one, the response to his recall has been 50s in each of his three appearances and a decent cameo of his off spin in the third Test. Like Cox, he appears to have a plane ticket for South Africa sorted.

Jamie Smith: 6.5/10

Finished the summer strongly, countering a previous struggle dating back to the Ashes. Kept smoothly, whether up to the stumps or back, and made it three 50s in four Tests with eye-catching innings at Lord’s and Edgbaston, where he struck 69 despite nursing a dislocated finger.

Gus Atkinson: 5/10 

Luckless for seven-eighths of the series, it was not until Pakistan’s final innings that he put some dropped catches and near misses behind him. He had 201 runs to his name, in fact, before he took his second wicket, courtesy of a splendid slip catch by Lawrence. He will bowl worse and take more.

Ollie Robinson: 9.5/10

Near perfect from start to finish, Robinson’s mastery with the new ball makes one wonder what he might have added to England’s Ashes bid last winter. No one has taken 20+ wickets in a series in this country at such a low average before (21 at 8.76) and he even added a 50 with the bat.

Jofra Archer: 7.5/10

This is the first multi-match series in which the Sussex fast bowler has been an ever present during a seven-year Test career. A collection of 23 wickets also makes this his best ever summer. The sustained pace and hostility in the three outings against Pakistan were arguably his most impressive trait, but his failure to deal with Razaullah’s long handle added a late blip.

Josh Tongue: 8.5/10

His determination to dismiss batsmen with attacking plans means he can be expensive at times, but his success rate is what England will be most enthused about ahead of bigger challenges against South Africa away and Australia at home. His 19 victims mean he is averaging more than five a Test over a 15-match career.
