The S&P 500 fell 36.41 points, or 0.5%, to close at 7,765.36.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq slumped 345.35 points, or 1.3%, to end at 27,193.34.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 51.77 points, or 0.1%, to finish at 51,231.64.
The Dow eked out a gain as Treasury bond yields retreated from elevated levels and oil prices eased from a bigger jump earlier in the trading session amid worries over the U.S.-Iran conflict. President Donald Trump said in a social-media post Thursday that the U.S. wouldn’t attack Iran before U.S. midterm elections on Nov. 3, which appeared to trigger some relief in some parts of the stock market as Treasury rates pulled further away from recent highs.
