By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Usually the people asking the question are not the ones being targeted to do this HOWEVER there is usually a signal these firms give that shouldn’t be ignored.
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people. I try and help you perform at a high level in your career or your job search, with staffing, with managing and leading, a whole host of things related to the workplace.
In this video, I’m just trying to get caught up on questions I’ve been asked. Do companies ever interview people to gather data with no interest in hiring? Absolutely. Of course, that happens.
Now, it tends not to be for the junior people. It tends to be for more experienced leadership individuals. So, if you’re relatively inexperienced, they don’t really care.
What they care about is for veteran people. And, as such, sometimes they’re trying to understand the process that your firm is involved with making decisions. For example, they’re trying to create a new system that relates to or competes with something that your firm is known for.
They interview in order to get a sense of how the system was architected. I’m just pulling one example. But do you think there’s any great secrecy around accounting and how things are done in accounting? How about engineering? Do you think there’s any great secrets about how things get engineered? No.
So, I’ll just simply say, yes, it happens. And we’ll never know how to recognize it unless they give you a homework assignment to do. Sometimes, the homework assignments translate into free consulting.
And, as such, I’ve always encouraged people politely decline to do a homework assignment. Well, other people will do it. Yes, I understand that.
And if this looks like free consulting to me, I don’t work for free. Do you? Oh, no, we’re not doing free consulting. It’s going to be based upon what we see.
You mean having a conversation with me isn’t adequate, even though most firms find it easy to make such choices? Well, we like to do it differently. That is great. I’m glad you like to do it differently.
I’m just not going to do it. I’m going to tell you to your face that I don’t do free consulting. This has nothing to do with anything we’re doing.
And that’s really the key to this is if it vaguely looks like something that relates to what they’re asking you to do once you’re on board, don’t do it. Just politely push it away. I’m Jeff Altman.
