A disabled singer-songwriter was left furious after a restaurant wrote ‘Happy Birthday Wheelchair’ on her plate during her family celebration. 

Antonia Sinibaldi was celebrating her 29th birthday with friends and family at Blu On The Hudson restaurant in Weehawken, New Jersey when the night took an unexpected turn. 

She ordered a $16 cinnamon apple dessert but was shocked to find the offensive message written about her. 

Sinibaldi told the Daily Mail she will never be going back to the restaurant. 

‘My family is angry. My friends are angrier, but me, I am just baffled,’ she told CBS News.

The action left everyone at her table speechless and even prompted a physical reaction from Sinibaldi.

‘Body started shaking, body started spasming. My body reacted faster than my mouth or my mind,’ she told NBC 4 News in a video interview. 

Sinibaldi suffered a serious spinal injury after a drunk driving accident left her paralyzed from the neck down at two years old.

She has relied on a motorized wheelchair for a majority of her life.

The $16 apple and cinnamon dish featured the words ‘Happy Birthday Wheelchair’ written on the plate, an apparent reference to Sinibaldi’s disability 

‘It just took me by surprise. I shouldn’t be reminded of something I already know,’ said Sinibaldi.

She claimed she spoke to a manager but was not immediately offered an apology. Instead, they allegedly offered her more and more complimentary drinks. 

A spokesperson from the restaurant has since released a statement. 

‘The word “wheelchair” was used as a reference to identify where a birthday dessert with a candle should be delivered. Unfortunately, that notation was misunderstood and was written on the plate itself,’ the statement read.

 ‘There was absolutely no malicious or disrespectful intent behind the notation. However, we fully understand how seeing that word written on a plate could be deeply hurtful and upsetting.’

They expressed that they’re ‘deeply saddened’ and ‘sincerely apologize’ for the workflow mistake. 

After posting the bizarre incident to her social media, Sinibaldi’s followers rushed in with their reactions. 

One user wrote: ‘Omg. My mouth is open right now and on the floor! That is so rude of them to write that!’

Another said:  ‘Sorry WHAT is this?? What an inappropriate thing to do!’ 

The restaurant has since said they are reinforcing proper ticketing and communication procedures within its team to ensure a similar situation doesn’t happen again.

‘Blu on the Hudson is proud to be a part of the Hudson County community, and we are committed to being a place where every guest feels welcomed, respected, and valued.’ 

They noted they attempted to reach out to Sinibaldi directly to rectify the situation but have not yet got hold of her. 

However, Sinibaldi has said: ‘The more people interview me the more the restaurant tries to apologize to me. Still I am not going to go back.’
