Netflix’s growing list of international originals has produced several breakout hits, with many non-English series finding audiences well beyond their home countries. Among them, the Dutch comedy Roosters has stood out for its witty humor and relatable take on modern life, earning a loyal fan base across multiple regions. Netflix officially confirmed that its hit Dutch comedy series Roosters will end after its third season. The streaming giant gave the show the green light for its final chapter, which is currently in production and slated to premiere in 2027. Earlier this week, Netflix announced that Roosters has already started production on Season 3 after the first two seasons dominated Netflix’s top 10.

“In this third and final season, we once again follow the tight-knit friend group as they try to figure out life in the modern world. Will everything work out in the end?” the official log line from Netflix said, hinting at new challenges and unanswered questions for the group’s future.

Now, Netflix is ending the popular Dutch comedy series because it was planned as a definitive conclusion to the friend group’s storyline. Instead of just cancelling the show, the creators and the network have both agreed upon ending the show in a highly creative manner. The next season would provide the perfect closure for the characters of the series and would remain true to the comedic and touching nature of the series.

While the series is coming to an end, its story remains one of the key reasons behind its popularity.

How Roosters explores friendship and modern masculinity

Roosters revolves around four men who are middle-aged and struggle with adapting to the changing world and the impact of the same on their sense of masculinity. All of them have personal and professional issues and are unable to maintain self-respect and identity. The show narrates the story of how ordinary men adapt themselves in their lives.

The comedy revolves around their friendship as they deal with marriage, parenting, work, and personal development amidst their complex life. It can be seen how the comedy derives much of its appeal from the different characters of the friends and the various embarrassing scenarios that they experience. Beyond the humor portrayed in it, Roosters provides a contemplative take on friendship, self-discovery, and adulting. Nevertheless, despite sharing genres, this show is different from the one available on HBO, starring Steve Carell, which shares the same name.

Meanwhile, it can now be observed that many series are opting for an intentional conclusion rather than stretching their stories beyond what is intended. It took three seasons for the Roosters to be able to blend comedy and meaningful lessons about friendship, identity, and adulting, thereby gaining an ardent fan base. In its concluding season, Roosters looks ready to deliver the completion of the characters’ journey in its signature charm.
