A college rugby player has tragically died after suffering a medical emergency during a run with his teammates.

Dominic Peterson, a sophomore at Saint Mary’s College in California, was on a public jogging path with his teammates in Moraga on Friday when the incident occurred.

School president Roger Thompson revealed Peterson suffered a ‘medical crisis’ and was rushed to a local hospital, where he died. Details of the ‘medical crisis’ remain unknown.

‘This is heartbreaking for our community and our deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones,’ the school said in a statement posted on social media.

‘Dominic’s smile was contagious and one that would brighten a room when he entered. He always gave 100 per cent effort and encouraged those around him to do the same.’

An emotional memorial service to celebrate Peterson was held on Saturday morning at the school’s chapel.

The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team also posted a moving tribute, describing the incident as an ‘unimaginable loss.’

‘In times like these, we are reminded that St. Mary’s is more than a college, more than a team and more than a community,’ their statement read.

‘We are a family. When one of us hurts, we all hurt. And when one of our own needs support, we stand together.’

Peterson’s former teammates at California Grizzlies Rugby also honored him as ‘leader.’ He captained them on tours to the Great Northwest Challenge, Japan and Argentina.

‘Captain. Teammate. Friend,’ the club said. ‘We have lost one of our leaders, and we are heartbroken,’ the organization said.
