The Green Choice Program was announced by the Province of Nova Scotia on January 27, 2025, as part of its Clean Power Plan to enhance grid decarbonization and energy independence. The initiative enables large-scale Nova Scotia Power customers—including public institutions, universities and eligible commercial and industrial businesses—to procure up to 100 percent of their electricity from locally sourced renewable projects. An independent procurement process managed by Coho Climate Advisors secured bids for 625 MW of new wind capacity, scheduled to come online by the end of 2028, with the aim of delivering affordable clean power and stabilizing rate volatility for both participants and broader ratepayers.
By commissioning these wind farms, the program is projected to increase renewable penetration on the provincial grid by about 19 percent and reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 8 percent, supporting Nova Scotia’s legislated target of 80 percent renewable generation by 2030. The developments represent a CAD 1.2 billion capital investment—roughly half of which will remain within the province—and involve co-ownership partnerships with Mi’kmaw communities. Construction activities are expected to create around 700 jobs during the build phase and 30 permanent positions thereafter, while community benefits include training programs, capacity-building grants, scholarships and new municipal tax revenues for host regions.
