Clayface is one of the more unusual comic book movies to hit theaters this year. It’s unique not just because it’s a supervillain origin story, but also because it’s a gruesome, R-rated body horror film. Originally written by Mike Flanagan, the story follows actor Matt Hagen, who takes part in an experiment to restore his face after mobsters leave him disfigured. However, he slowly loses his mind and seeks vengeance as he transforms into a shapeshifting monster.
As a long-time fan of horror and comic book movies, I am pleased to see DC take such a bold direction with its cinematic universe. Though the film follows a second-tier Batman villain in a new interconnected franchise, DC’s gamble has already paid off after its opening weekend.
This low-budget comic book movie grossed $43 million in theaters worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. It is also “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes with a 75% rating from critics. At the same time, it received a 94% rating from audiences on the platform, matching the score of the hit horror movie Obsession. While the latter had to impress many people to get an extended release, Clayface, as a Warner Bros. movie, was guaranteed a 45-day theatrical exclusive before becoming available at home.
As the third film in James Gunn’s DC Universe, many people have had their eyes on Clayface and its theatrical performance. Some fans out there may already be wondering when they’ll get to watch this movie at home. Though the movie just arrived in cinemas this October, we already have some answers about Clayface’s home release, specifically its exclusive 4K Ultra HD steelbook debut.
Preorders for Clayface are now available on multiple platforms
A digital release date hasn’t been announced, but it should be available next year
Though Clayface will remain limited to theaters for 45 days, the film’s at-home streaming date still hasn’t been announced. Fortunately, you can now preorder it on digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and Apple TV for $25. If you’re a physical media collector looking to buy DC’s latest blockbuster, you’re in luck. You can now preorder Clayface 4K Ultra steelbook at Amazon and Walmart. While the steelbook is currently out of stock at Amazon, Walmart is still selling it for $38.
Clayface’s limited edition steelbook features a special cover and copies of the movie in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and Digital. Bonus features for this edition have not been revealed yet. You can also preorder a single 4K disc on Amazon for $32.98, a DVD for $18, or a Blu-ray disc for $27.98.
If you prefer to buy a steelbook, there is a catch. Walmart says it won’t arrive until July 24, 2027, so any preorders placed today will arrive after a nine-month wait. This date is quite surprising for a major studio blockbuster, especially one released by DC and Warner Bros. Remember that 2025’s Superman got a steelbook release two and a half months after it premiered in theaters.
On the other hand, the film’s steelbook is said to come out on February 24, 2027, in France, according to 4K Ultra HD. This could mean different countries have different debuts, but it could also mean the steelbook’s release date hasn’t been finalized in the U.S.
When will Clayface arrive on streaming?
This DC film should hit HBO Max in early 2027
Though I plan to see Clayface in the theater, some of you may choose to wait to see the movie on streaming. Personally, I’d rather not pay $25 to rent a movie for immediately after it hits PVOD platforms. Fortunately, Clayface is expected to arrive on HBO Max shortly after its home release.
For those who don’t know, HBO Max is the primary streaming service for DC and Warner Bros. films, including Superman, The Batman, Supergirl, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. DC movies usually arrive on HBO Max 70 to 90 days after their theatrical premiere. This means subscribers should be able to stream Clayface sometime in January 2027.
You can choose to subscribe now to watch Clayface later on, but a basic subscription with ads will cost you $10.99/month. If you want to avoid streaming with ads, a standard plan costs $18.49/month. Here’s a little life hack: you can get a 7-day free trial by signing up for HBO Max as an add-on through Prime Video.
