Charlie Kirk ‘assassin’ Tyler Robinson embraces wild conspiracy theories as trial looms

Far-fetched conspiracy theories about Charlie Kirk’s slaying have run rampant ever since the conservative influencer was gunned down in a high-profile assassination.

And no one is more intrigued by the wild narratives than the alleged murderer, himself, the Daily Mail can reveal.

Tyler Robinson, the 23-year-old accused of slaughtering Kirk, is often left surprised – and even amused – by the bizarre theories, according to a member of the alleged assassin’s legal team.

‘He’s as interested as anyone in the rumors about him,’ the source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said.

‘The conspiracy scenarios, the depictions as some sort of millennial double agent bring a certain comic relief… and he doesn’t have much else to laugh about.’

A barrage of unfounded conspiracies have exploded online in the wake of Kirk’s killing at Utah Valley University last September – including that Robinson is actually a Mossad agent ordered to gun down the conservative commentator on behalf of Israel.

Another claims the alleged gunman carried out the hit for the French or Egyptian governments.

Others insist Robinson was framed, or acted as a decoy, for Kirk’s true killer who could have been working for the US deep state, Jeffrey Epstein cronies or – absurdly – even Kirk’s widow, Erika.

Still, the theories have shown zero sign of slowing down as Robinson prepares to face court again next month where prosecutors are slated to unveil their evidence against him.

Many of the far-fetched theories tied to Kirk’s murder in recent months have been peddled widely by the likes of Candace Owens, Tucker Carlson, Alex Jones and other right-wing influencers.

‘It’s fitting that the killing of Kirk, an expounder of conspiracy theories himself, is drawing this spate of conspiracies,’ said David Robert Grimes, author of The Irrational Ape: Why We Fall for Disinformation, Conspiracy Theory, and Propaganda.

During a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 6, prosecutors are expected to unpack a motherlode of digital evidence, including internet searches, messages and online writings pointing to Robinson’s alleged motive: Anger over Kirk’s conservative politics.

Investigators have already claimed Robinson was in a romantic relationship with a transgender roommate and was especially furious at Kirk for spreading ‘hatred’ toward trans and gay people.

Robinson’s defense team has unwittingly fueled conspiracy theories, in part, by arguing that federal ballistic analysis does not establish a clear match between the bullet evidence recovered from the scene and the rifle he allegedly carried.

Pundits have interpreted the inconclusiveness of the forensic results as evidence either of Robinson’s innocence or proof that he was part of a much broader conspiracy.

Much of the speculation that Robinson wasn’t acting alone has been put forth by Candace Owens, the conservative commentator who once worked with Kirk at Turning Point USA

Robinson was said to be in a relationship with his transgender roommate Lance Twiggs and investigators claim he was angry at Kirk for spreading hatred toward trans and gay people. When asked about his relationship with Robinson, Twiggs refused to answer

Much of the speculation that Robinson wasn’t acting alone — or may not have been the true killer at all — has been put forth by Owens, the conservative commentator who used to work with Kirk at Turning Point USA.

In the more than eight months since her friend’s killing, Owens has suggested that Kirk had conflicts with wealthy pro-Israel donors and hinted that these disputes may have led to his Mossad-ordered assassination.

Owens has also noted that, at the end of his life, Kirk – a self-professed friend of Israel – had started expressing internal criticism of how that country was managing its public image and US support, especially in light of the estimated 70,000 killings its military carried out in Gaza.

She has implied, too, that there may have been involvement by foreign governments, and has put forth theories that internal figures connected to Turning Point USA – including Kirk’s widow and successor, Erika – may have known more than they’ve previously admitted.

Kirk’s grief-stricken widow and mother of his two children has condemned the theories and publicly begged Owens to stop.

There is no verified evidence supporting Owens’s claims about foreign plots, Turning Point USA involvement, or any large conspiracy behind the assassination.

Meanwhile, Tucker Carlson, for his part, hasn’t explicitly claimed Robinson is innocent but has cast doubt on prosecutors’ narrative about Kirk’s killing and amplified questions about whether Israel or other ‘elite’ interests might have been involved.

Alex Jones, Roger Stone and Steve Bannon also have all suggested the shooting looked like a professional hit and speculated that Robinson, if involved at all, wasn’t acting alone.

Other online influencers have suggested Kirk, who before his death devoted podcasts pushing for broader release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, may have been the target of a hit by people implicated in the Epstein Files.

And others have said Kirk may have been targeted by deep-state actors within the US military or intelligence agencies given his opposition in the last months of his life to large-scale war or a ‘regime change’ in Iran.

Experts who study disinformation have noted that suspects in major political assassinations almost always trigger rampant conspiracy theories.

Among the most famous in American history was Lee Harvey Oswald – the perp believed to have gunned down John F. Kennedy in Dallas in 1963 before he, too, was assassinated two days later.

Conspiracy theorists have for decades claimed that Oswald killed Kennedy at the behest of the CIA, the Soviet Union, Cuba or the mafia, and that he was not a lone shooter, but rather part of a broader hit team.

Meanwhile, James Earl Ray fueled conspiracy theories about himself by saying he was coerced into gunning down Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968 by a mysterious figure called ‘Raoul.’

Sirhan Sirhan, the man accused of killing Robert F. Kennedy two months later, prompted theories involving hypnosis, mind control, a second gunman, and intelligence-agency involvement.

Wild conspiracy theories tied to assassinations long preceded social media and date back long before the killings of President Abraham Lincoln and even Julius Caesar, according to Joseph Uscinski, an expert on disinformation at the University of Miami.

‘It’s human nature that some people are going to see major news events in ways that conform with their world views or politics. It’s always been a constant in human society,’ he said.

Kirk’s assassination may have sparked even more conspiracy theories than usual because of his own controversial views.

The late Turning Point USA founder frequently embraced ‘replacement theory’ views about immigration, race and gender. He also claimed that the 2020 US presidential election was stolen from President Trump through widespread fraud.

Kirk also took part in advancing Covid-19 vaccine misinformation and rallied against what he called ‘Cultural Marxism,’ the idea that elites and left-wing academics are intentionally undermining Western civilization through universities and media outlets.

He claimed, too, that universities are engaged in systematic ideological indoctrination against conservatives. Detractors have long argued that he exaggerated or distorted campus incidents into evidence of coordinated anti-conservative persecution.

Experts on disinformation said such ‘false flag theories’ have less to do with Robinson than with Kirk’s own polarizing beliefs, as well as a penchant among his followers to use his killing to advance their fringe views.

‘It’s not that surprising that many of his fans are conspiracy theorists just like he was,’ Grimes said.

‘People often want a more dramatic story than the evidence allows – a grand explanation that in their minds fits the scale of the event they just witnessed. What we have here are people craving a deeper resonance, a deeper narrative than what probably happened.’

Joan Donovan, an assistant professor of journalism and emerging media studies at Boston University and founder of the Critical Internet Studies Institute, noted pundits like Owens and Carlson make money from perpetuating salacious stories about Kirk’s assassination.

Donovan has already predicted Robinson’s upcoming hearing and whatever new evidence prosecutors may reveal against him will do little to quell conspiracy theories.

‘The myth-making in this case is going to get much worse before it gets better,’ she warned.

‘There is no chance the reality show around it is going to end any time soon.’

Robinson is charged with aggravated murder in the Sept. 10 assassination  on the Utah Valley University campus during Kirk’s ‘American Comeback Tour.’

Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty against him if he’d convicted, arguing he prepared for the attack by scouting the venue in advance and bringing a rifle to a rooftop overlooking Kirk’s appearance.

He has not yet entered a plea.
