Carmina Shoemaker has opened its first store in Japan, with the new boutique located in Tokyo’s prestigious Marunouchi district. The store officially opened on July 25th, 2026, marking another significant step in the continued international expansion of the family-owned Spanish shoemaker.

Carmina is certainly no stranger to Japanese shoe enthusiasts. They have been available in the country through various retailers for some time, but this is its first standalone boutique in Japan and therefore its first opportunity to present the full Carmina offering directly to the Japanese market.

Truthfully, Japan feels like one of the most obvious places for Carmina to have its own store. Japan has long had one of the world’s strongest cultures surrounding quality footwear (and products in general), hence the vast amount of bespoke shoemakers in what many might feel is quite a small country.

Japanese customers tend to appreciate the details that brands such as Carmina are built around: elegant lasts, good leather, proper construction, careful finishing, and classic styles designed to last far longer than the average pair of dress shoes.

Carmina’s history dates back to 1866, with the company now in its sixth generation of family ownership. From its base in Mallorca, the brand has grown into one of the best-known names in Goodyear-welted footwear, with stores across Europe and the United States. You can read about their most recent openings in London and San Francisco.

Its Tokyo opening comes during Carmina’s 160th anniversary year, making the timing even more fitting. It almost feels like they have been opening a store per year in the last 5 years. I am curious to know what is next!

The new store will carry Carmina’s collections for both men and women, alongside leather goods and accessories. This is all quite standard for Carmina. But more importantly, it gives customers the chance to see a much broader selection of the brand’s lasts, leathers, colors, and styles than would normally be possible through a third-party retailer. And I imagine they will hopefully have their 3D scanning machine present for even better access to superbly fitting footwear.

That is particularly relevant with Carmina, as the brand’s offering is far larger than many people realize. Beyond the classic Oxfords and loafers for which it is perhaps best known, Carmina produces everything from boots and casual footwear to more distinctive models in shell cordovan, suede, grain leather, and numerous other materials, as well as boat shoes, soft-sole loafers, driving mocs and the like.

Carmina has always occupied an interesting place within the shoe industry. It offers traditionally made footwear, elegant shapes, and a huge variety of options while remaining more accessible than many of the luxury brands operating above it. While some might complain of rising costs, what you get in terms of quality compared to other giant shoe brands is quite impressive.

That combination has naturally made the brand popular with customers who care about real shoemaking but do not necessarily want to pay inflated luxury-fashion prices. Japan, meanwhile, is a market that tends to understand that distinction better than most.

The country has a highly knowledgeable footwear customer base and a long-standing appreciation for European shoemaking. Japanese customers are also generally more interested in the finer details of a product than simply the name printed inside it, which should suit Carmina perfectly.

The boutique is located on Marunouchi Naka-Dori Avenue, one of Tokyo’s most prominent shopping and business areas.

For Carmina, this is not simply another store opening. Establishing a permanent presence in Japan places the brand directly within one of the most important and discerning markets for quality footwear in the world. After 160 years of shoemaking, it seems rather fitting that Carmina has finally opened a store there. I wish them the best of success!
