I have a video that proclaims, “Your Resume is Not a Tatoo.” It is not a permanent document . . . but we treat our careers and our work as though it will live on in perpetuity and help us stay immortal.
Even with non-profit groups where I helped found a chapter, my name has no meaning. I suspect the same is true for you, too.
So, why do we act as though every decision we make is life and death? Why do we think in terms of “our legacy” when we talk about our work?
We care.
It matters to us that we do good work . . . and that is a great quality to have.
But both you and your work will be forgotten. Your legacy is that you cared and that it mattered. It is not some all pervasive memory of you as though people will read scripture about you.
You cared.
