British woman fights for life in hospital after rocks crash down on tourists at famed Greek waterfall

A British tourist is fighting for her life in hospital after she was hit by a rock which fell from a famous waterfall in Greece.

The woman, 50, was hit on the head at the Nydri waterfalls in Lefkada, Greece, where a fragment of rock came loose and broke off which caused the severe injury.

She was rescued by firefighters who raced to the steep, rocky cliff and carried her to safety on an orange stretcher.

The woman was then rushed to hospital for surgery and also had a breathing tube fitted, according to local reports.

The holiday maker is reportedly in critical condition and is set to be transferred to a specialised trauma centre in Athens.

Several other tourists at the iconic spot sustained minor injuries from smaller stones that hit them.

It remains unknown whether the incident was as a result of a natural collapse or if warning signs had been ignored.

Nydri Falls is one of the most famous waterfalls in Greece. It is an estimated 39ft tall and known for its lush surroundings and canyon lagoon.

The popular beauty spot attracts thousands of visitors every summer. It is reached by taking a short but difficult hiking trail through a narrow gorge, characterised by rugged and uneven pathways.

It comes after a tourist was crushed to death by Malta’s world-famous ‘Kissing Elephants’ arch rock formation, which collapsed after an American holidaymaker jumped off it and into the sea.

The body of the 26-year-old Chinese man, who has not yet been named, was pinned to the seabed after large rocks collapsed on to his jet ski as he rode underneath it on Saturday evening.

The archway, located on the island of Comino, collapsed at around 7pm, shortly after a 32-year-old American tourist jumped off it, according to the Times of Malta.

A 27-year-old Chinese woman, who was also on the jet ski, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Gozo General Hospital where doctors reported her injuries were not life-threatening.

The American tourist, who was rescued by a passing boat, received medical treatment at Mgarr Harbour but did not need to go to hospital.

On Sunday evening, the Civil Protection Department sent in heavy equipment to remove the fallen rock so that army divers could recover the body.

A Maltese magistrate has opened an inquiry into the incident as investigators continue to look into the tragedy.
