Bridlen’s Blake Shoes: The Best Value in Blake Construction?

When it comes to welted footwear, Blake construction often sits in an interesting place. It’s typically seen as the more affordable, sleeker alternative to Goodyear welted shoes, but with that lower price point usually comes compromise—whether that’s in materials, finishing, or overall build quality. Its process involves. That’s why Bridlen’s Blake shoes caught my attention.

Here you have a brand offering Blake-constructed footwear at one of the lowest price points in the industry, yet somehow managing to deliver a level of quality that feels out of place for what you’re paying. And that naturally raises the question: are Bridlen Blake shoes actually the best value in Blake construction today?

Most of you know that I do not love Blake-constructed shoes. I don’t hide it, and it will likely never change. But this line is different for the reasons explained below.

Low-Price, Same-Quality Leather

I handle a lot of Bridlen shoes, and what I noticed about their Blake Line is that it despite selling for just above $120 on their website, it is offering the same calibre of leather as their higher-end welted shoes. If you look carefully at the photos presented, you can see how clean and tight the pores are. It is really impressive the level of quality they achieve at the price point offered.

While the upper remains constant in quality, one who knows materials will see a different sole than the Welted shoes. And they don’t hide that fact. All in all, there will be necessary deductions in the Blake shoes from the welted ones, but the biggest component of all, i.e. the upper, appears to have the same quality.

Features Similar to Welted Shoes

What drove me to be more curious about this line is the fact that if you just look quickly and don’t stop to think, they almost look like welted shoes. Check out the side profiles of the Bridlen Blake line oxford in contrast to the welted oxford. The average person would never know the difference, and that is what caught my eye.

Their Blake shoes look like welted shoes. How?

Bridlen Blake line shoes have the sole features mimicking a welted sole. The sole is thicker than your average Blake-constructed shoe. It has a faux welt look and a faux sole stitch on the welt. The Blake stitch you see on the sole, stitches to the insole and not on the welt, as it would appear. That makes them look welted, but feel/perform like Blake Stitch shoes.

Their Blake shoes also offer a corked footbed, as do welted shoes. That is rare in Blake shoes. But that feature adds the extra comfort that I personally feel more Blake shoes lack.

Classic Offering

Bridlen Blake shoes offer a small collection of classic models. You will only find brown and black models listed on their website, but I am quite sure you can request any model offered in Blake construction. I may be wrong, but I feel like Bridlen is quite flexible and can accommodate a change from Goodyear welted to Blake construction in any model, if you write them up and make a special request. This might come with a further upcharge, but the flexibility might be worth the price.

Value Offer

What really separates this line from others is the fact that they offer a substantial shoe well below $200. For the Blake fans out there, this collection offers better value than most Blake shoes that I have ever seen, especially when compared to shoes that have prices that soar about $500. That is saying something.

But the reality is that when you buy something at this price, not every pair can be perfect, and one cannot expect them to be so. This is the disconnect most people have. They read this post, see my high praise and expect $1000 quality control on a pair of shoes under $200. That is not the case. I have seen perfect pairs of these shoes and ones that had flaws. The reality is that to get an average price of below $200, the flaws must exist.

That is the reality of shoemaking.

Where to Find?

Naturally, you can find Bridlen Blake shoes on their own website, but it is also a collection we stock at The Shoe Snob Marketplace. I have been working with Bridlen for a while now, and while I am a strong proponent of welted footwear, I do feel that these offer some of the best value out there for someone who simply does not like the Goodyear welted construction and prefers something a bit more flexible.

Between their site and The Shoe Snob Marketplace, you will find two different prices. At Bridlen, you will find the worldwide price that does not include ‘Shipping/Duty’ Fees. After international bank transactions, their final price comes to about $155-$160 when shopping on Bridlen’s site.

When shopping at The Shoe Snob Marketplace, the price is $179 all in. A slightly higher upcharge, but you will deal with The Shoe Snob and a North American company. Shipping and duties are inclusive in that price. Either way you go, you cannot go wrong!
