Bradley Cooper is set to star as Duke in Paramount’s new G.I. Joe movie, putting one of Hollywood’s most recognizable leading men at the front of the military franchise. The casting also reunites Cooper with Danny McBride, adding an unexpected creative connection to a project built around a very different kind of action hero. For Cooper, the role arrives while he is balancing acting, directing and a growing reputation as one of Hollywood’s more hands-on filmmakers.
There is a neat bit of Hollywood history tucked inside this casting. Cooper has already crossed paths with McBride in a much stranger corner of the latter’s career, and now that connection is moving from a short comic appearance to a major studio action movie.
Bradley Cooper becomes Paramount’s new Duke
Bradley Cooper is set to play Duke, the field commander and leader of the G.I. Joe team, in Danny McBride’s upcoming Paramount movie. The project marks a fresh take on Hasbro’s long-running military property, with Danny McBride directing and writing the screenplay alongside Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri. Paramount has also confirmed that the new movie is being developed separately from the Transformers universe, despite the crossover teased at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

The casting is a Deadline exclusive, with the outlet reporting that McBride had Cooper at the top of his wish list once he landed the directing job. Deadline reported that Cooper’s packed schedule initially made his availability uncertain, particularly with his work on the upcoming Ocean’s prequel, where he is writing, directing and starring opposite Margot Robbie. After reading McBride’s script and meeting with the filmmaker, however, Cooper wanted the part and negotiations began in recent weeks.
That history with McBride gives the casting an extra layer. Cooper previously appeared in McBride’s HBO series The Righteous Gemstones, playing an ancestor of the Gemstone family, Elijah Gemstone. Their second collaboration therefore has a particularly Hollywood shape: a brief comedy detour eventually leading to Cooper taking command of a major action franchise.
Paramount is building around its franchise vault
The G.I. Joe move also fits neatly into Paramount’s broader push to turn recognizable intellectual property into a more reliable theatrical pipeline. The studio has been assembling projects around established brands and filmmakers, including a new Days of Thunder project, World War Z, Paranormal Activity, Star Trek, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the first Call of Duty movie.

That strategy has become even more significant as Paramount moves toward its Warner Bros. Discovery combination. The proposed $111 billion deal has faced a prolonged antitrust fight, although Paramount reached a settlement with 12 state attorneys general in September that removed a major obstacle to the transaction. The agreement includes commitments around theatrical output and US film production, reinforcing the broader ambition to maintain a substantial movie pipeline.
With Bradley Cooper attached to G.I. Joe, Paramount is not simply reviving another piece of Hasbro history. It is putting a major star behind one of its most recognizable pieces of IP while pairing him with a filmmaker whose previous work has rarely looked anything like a traditional studio tentpole. The real question now is what McBride and Cooper do with Duke once the uniform is on.
