Backrooms has quickly become one of the biggest movies of 2026. Based on director Kane Parsons’ hit web series, itself inspired by a viral internet creepypasta, the film earned over $360 million at the global box office on a $10 million production budget. Thanks to such glowing reviews and a loyal fanbase, this A24 horror movie has become the indie studio’s highest-grossing movie. This success not only led to A24 re-releasing the movie with 20 minutes of bonus footage, but it also sparked widespread discussion about the rise of YouTube-born filmmakers in Hollywood.
Sadly, Backrooms couldn’t stay in theaters forever. Those of you planning to watch the movie at home don’t have to wait any longer. Backrooms arrived on PVOD streaming platforms on July 14, 2026. Audiences can rent the movie on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home for $19.99, or they can purchase it for $24.99.
As a horror fan, I’m excited about the film’s digital release, but I have to address the elephant in the room, or rather in the Backrooms.
Where is the Backrooms physical release?
Physical media matters
Though the rise of streaming nearly made DVDs, Blu-ray, and 4K movies a thing of the past, audiences have once more embraced physical media. Owning a disc copy of a movie ensures they can always watch the story they love in case it’s no longer available to stream. While Obsession’s recent physical release was announced alongside its PVOD premiere, Backrooms has yet to set a date for any physical home premiere.
Some of the most successful A24 movies, including Everything Everywhere All at Once and Marty Supreme, have gotten Blu-Ray and 4K releases, ensuring their access goes beyond streaming. Considering the massive popularity and devoted fanbase of Backrooms, a physical media release seems like the most natural next step for A24. Fans are still exploring the film, breaking down little details, and debating theories about the story. Releasing Backrooms physically would only add fuel to the fanbase’s fire.
Fortunately, A24 has already made Blu-Ray/4K copies of Backrooms available for preorder on its website. A24 has yet to reveal an official physical release date for Backrooms. However, preorders are expected to ship in late August 2026, indicating they will be available around then.
Even if you’ve already seen the film in theaters, fans have an extra incentive to preorder it. The movie’s physical edition includes special features like the “Everything Must Go” bonus footage shown during the theatrical re-release. Fans can also hear exclusive commentary from director Kane Parsons, VFX supervisor Edward J. Douglas, Sound Designer Eugenio Battaglia, and Composer Edo Van Breemen, offering a deep dive into how Backrooms was made, breaking down the film’s scenes and visual effects.
Those who purchase Backrooms from PVOD platforms won’t be able to access this extra footage. However, the “Everything Must Go” footage will be available to watch for free on Parsons’ YouTube channel, according to Bloody Disgusting.
What about HBO Max?
Backrooms will soon be available to stream on HBO Max
Given the film’s high PVOD price, some may prefer to wait and stream Backrooms for free on a platform they’re already subscribed to. Luckily for HBO Max subscribers, they won’t have to wait as long as everyone else to stream the hit horror movie.
A24 has long had a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to release its films on HBO Max shortly after their PVOD runs. Though A24’s films have eventually dropped on other streaming platforms, the studio’s agreement has given HBO Max subscribers early access to A24 movies. An official HBO Max release date hasn’t been announced for Backrooms, but chances are that the movie will be available on the platform sooner rather than later.
Based on how previous A24 films were released, Backrooms should arrive on HBO Max four to five months after its theatrical premiere. The movie came out in theaters on May 29, which would put its HBO Max release date sometime in late September or early October. In the meantime, audiences can stream many other A24 horror movies on HBO Max, including The Lighthouse, Midsommar, Heretic, Undertone, and Bring Her Back.
There has been no update on when Backrooms will stream for free on other monthly platforms. Whether you choose to rent the film, buy a DVD, or wait to stream it for free, Backrooms has proven itself a must-see horror film after its record-breaking theatrical run. Those who missed seeing one of the year’s biggest movies in theaters now have multiple ways to stream it at home.
