Aussies will need to spend more to post a letter from today, as Australia Post raises prices amid declining letter volumes and rising delivery costs.
Australia Post customers will pay $1.85 for a basic stamp from September 1, up from $1.70, while sending larger letters will also cost more.
Letters weighing up to 125g will increase from $3.40 to $3.70. Those up to 250g will rise from $5.10 to $5.55.
Concession stamp prices and seasonal greeting card stamps remain unchanged at $3 for a booklet of five and 65c respectively.
However, basic stamps, which cost $1.10 at the start of 2023, could reach $2.25 by 2028. This further increase has not been approved at this stage.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said it did not object to the increases as Australia Post would likely struggle to cover the cost of delivering its letter service despite the higher prices.
‘After assessing the proposal, we don’t object to Australia Post’s proposed price increases,’ ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said.
‘Our findings suggest Australia Post will still fall slightly short of recovering the efficient costs of providing these services, even with the proposed price increase.’

Australians are sending letters at levels not seen since the 1930s, with mail volumes expected to keep shrinking by about 10 per cent a year over the coming years.
However, Australia Post’s losses have eased in recent years, partly due to stamp price increases.
‘Australia Post is getting closer to covering its costs for reserved letter services due to recent price increases and changes to Australia Post’s delivery model,’ Ms Brakey said.
She also said that businesses which rely on the postal service would bear the brunt of the price hikes.
‘Businesses will bear most of the additional costs from this increase, and will likely pass these postage costs on to consumers,’ Ms Brakey said.
The price of a stamp has more than doubled in the last 12 years, when it cost 70 cents in 2014.
The most recent price hike was in 2025.
