If you fret about looking boxy in a blouse or shapeless in a slip dress, we found a secret solution. Fashion stylist Dawn Del Russo has a tip for creating figure-balancing outfits, and we’ve already seen it work on celebrities like Aubrey Plaza and Susan Sarandon.  

“It’s about creating proportions,” says Del Russo. If you opt for a billowy top, like the one Plaza recently wore, Del Russo recommends choosing one with a high neckline to highlight a narrower area on your body and balance the look. For structured blazers like Sarandon’s, close one button to accentuate your waist and wear a camisole underneath for added coverage.

Washable Silk Halter Top

When I interviewed Del Russo about the best blouses for people with large busts, this halter top made her list. While some may fear the dreaded “uniboob,” Del Russo says the high neckline eliminates that problem by creating a focal point. The silk material’s drape highlights your body’s curves while allowing room for your chest — or, in Plaza’s case, a baby bump.  

Washable Silk Drawstring Wide-Leg Pants

Plaza finished her look with silk pants similar to this pair. The monochromatic look is elongating, while the drawstring waist allows for easy movement and added comfort. Blazers like Sarandon’s, and this linen find, create shoulder structure that accentuates your waist. Del Russo recommends closing it with a button or belt at the midpoint to create an even more defined silhouette. One reviewer called this Quince blazer a “compliment magnet,” adding that it was comfortable, breathable, and “perfect for spring and summer.” 

Washable Stretch Silk V-Neck Cami

Whether you worry about feeling overexposed in a plunging neckline or want to introduce a new fabric or color to your outfit, you can’t go wrong with a silk cami, Del Russo says. It’s a wardrobe staple that layers easily under blazers, as in Sarandon’s outfit, and sweaters, but can also be worn on its own. Bonus: The lighter colors of this find are lined, so you don’t need to worry about your bra showing through.
