An empty pram was ‘deliberately’ set alight inside a block of flats in north London where a large number of Jewish families live.

Police are now investigating the incident, which occurred in Bridge Lane, Golders Green, as a suspected arson attack.

Residents reported seeing the culprit attempting to start a fire inside a communal stairwell at the building, at around 4am on Tuesday. 

One resident managed to douse the flames, which set off fire alarms, while the suspect is said to have fled the building after being challenged. 

Shomrim, a voluntary Jewish community patrol group, said the actions of the quick-thinking resident ‘[prevented] what could have been a far more serious incident.’

In a statement on social media, Shomrim added that volunteer officers had ‘attended the scene and recovered evidence believed to belong to the suspect.’

Met Police said it was investigating and no arrests had been made.

The suspected arson attack follows a series of incidents in recent months around north London, including Golders Green, targeting the Jewish community.

In March, four ambulances belonging to the Hatzola community ambulance service were firebombed, while a month later two Jewish men were stabbed in an alleged terror attack in Golders Green Road.

Essa Suleiman, 45, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the incident. He is set to stand trial next year.
