Apple held its highly anticipated “Surprise and Shine” event today, where new CEO John Ternus pulled back the curtain on the company’s latest iPhones, including the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, as well as its long-awaited first-ever foldable iPhone: the iPhone Duo.
Starting with the star of the show: the iPhone Duo. For months, there have been rumors about what Apple might call its foldable iPhone, including the iPhone Fold and iPhone Ultra, but the name it’s officially chosen is the iPhone Duo. And if that Duo name sounds familiar, it might be because Microsoft used it for the Surface Duo, its now-discontinued dual-screen Android phone.
The iPhone Duo shares some similarities with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a passport-esque design, but it has its own unique shape and feel, with a 5.4-inch outer display, a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR main display, two 48-megapixel rear cameras, and an A20 Pro chip. As for battery life, Apple says the iPhone Duo supports up to 44 hours when using the outer display, up to 31 hours when using the inner display, or up to 24 hours per charge if you use both the inner and outer displays equally.
The iPhone Duo will be available in two colors, Star White and Night Sky, and will start at $2,000, making it the most expensive iPhone ever. It will be available for pre-order on October 16 and launch on October 23.
iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max
New colors, and a huge jump in battery life
Turning to the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, both closely resemble the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, sharing the same unibody aluminum design Apple introduced last year, which offers improved cooling.
Upgrades on the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max include the faster A20 Pro chipset, which Apple calls “the fastest CPU in a smartphone,” a new mechanical aperture for the 48-megapixel main rear camera that gives you more precise depth-of-field control and better low-light photos, a next-generation vapor chamber for even better cooling, a smaller Dynamic Island, and a huge increase to battery life, with up to 36 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro and 45 hours on the 18 Pro Max.
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are available in four colors: Deep Black, Glacier (light blue), Silver, and Burgundy, with Apple saying goodbye to the Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue finishes offered with the iPhone 17 Pro.
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will be available for pre-order on Saturday, September 12, and launch on Friday, September 18. Unfortunately, though, prices have gone up this year due to the ongoing memory shortage, with the iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,200 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starting at $1,300.
