Now that one beloved part of Anne Hathaway‘s filmography — The Devil Wears Prada — has gotten the sequel treatment, the Oscar-winning actress says she is intent on a repeat, as her team is “constantly working on” bringing The Princess Diaries 3 to the silver screen.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Mother Mary star said she is “100%” looking to return to Genovia.

“We’re constantly working on it. [The Devil Wears Prada 2] cropped up unexpectedly and took over the space,” she said, adding that it “became impossible to focus on both at the same time.”

Now, “the intention is to make Princess Diaries hopefully next,” Hathaway confirmed, stressing that the threequel is not yet official as it has not been “greenlit or confirmed yet.” Aware that “everybody wants [a next installment],” she and her collaborators are currently “chipping away at the script.”

“If I learned anything from [The Devil Wears Prada 2], it’s that expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park,” she concluded.

In Garry Marshall’s 2001 film adaptation of Meg Cabot’s novel, Hathaway played Mia Thermopolis, an ordinary high school student whose life is upended when her grandmother (Julie Andrews) reveals she is next in line for the throne of a fictitious kingdom. The Whitney Houston-produced film was not only a breakout for the actress, but also a box office hit.

The 2004 sequel enjoyed similar returns, starring new cast member Chris Pine in his feature film debut as Nicholas Devereaux, Mia’s enemy-turned-love-interest.

In 2024, Deadline exclusively reported Crazy Rich Asians scribe Adele Lim would return to work with Disney as director of the third installment of its prized Princess Diaries franchise. Though Hathaway has confirmed she will return to reprise her role, it’s unclear if Andrews or Pine will also.
