Alan Alda Details Turning 90 Amid Parkinson’s Disease Battle

Alan Alda is reflecting on marking a major milestone.

Four months after the M*A*S*H alum turned 90 on Jan. 28, he shared his thoughts on celebrating the monumental birthday and getting older amid his battle with Parkinson’s disease.

“I was just thinking of the day, the actual day that I was 90 this year,” Alan said at the Conversation: More Rules for Aging event at 92NY in New York City May 21, per People. “We went out to dinner and the waiter came by at the end of the meal with a cupcake with a candle in it and led the singing, saying, ‘Happy birthday, older gentleman.'”

“Then I blew out the candle and they said, ‘You did it yourself. I didn’t help you,'” he added. “They kind of let you know.”

The West Wing star—who is dad to daughters Eve, 67, Elizabeth, 65, and Beatrice, 64, with wife Arlene Alda—recalled the moment his age really sunk in.

“You get a hint that you’re older when you’re like me,” he said, “and you discover that you’ve got three daughters and they’re all on Medicare.”
