Daughter whose family was wiped out by drug-addled foreign driver is furious that he will walk free under Keir Starmer’s early release scheme

A young teacher whose family was wiped out by a drug-addled foreign driver has told of her fury after it emerged the killer is poised to walk free under Labour’s controversial early-release scheme.

Summer Mace, 26, lost her mother Lisa, 49, sister Jade, 25, and stepdad Paul, 41, when their car was ploughed into at 96mph by Lithuanian national Aurelijus Cielevicius.

The 43-year-old, who escaped with just two broken ribs because he was so blitzed on drugs that his body did not tense for impact, was jailed for more than a decade.

However, he is now set to be freed and deported under Sir Keir Starmer’s plan to free up prison spaces – having served less than three years behind bars.

Furious Summer said Labour had given him a ‘get out of jail free card’.

In a heartbreaking Facebook post, she revealed how she and her father Jason, 53, are ‘awaiting the dreaded email to tell us he has been deported and is a free man’.

She said: ‘Unfortunately due to the new Early Release Scheme the man who killed my family could be released and deported anytime now.

‘We have been told that he is eligible and it’s very likely to happen, we just don’t know when.

‘This means he will be free in his own home country and get to live his life again whilst only having served three years for killing three people.

‘Three human beings – three of the most beautiful people.’

Cielevicius was high on a toxic cocktail of crystal meth, cannabis and party drug MCAT when he drove his BMW X5 onto the wrong side of the A47 in Norfolk, in January 2023.

He was found to be 15 times over the legal limit for methamphetamine and three times over the limit for cannabis.

Mephedrone was also in his system.

Summer, aged just 23 when she had to organise the funerals of her immediate family, revealed her mother’s injuries were so severe she was unable to kiss her goodbye.

She added: ‘I’ve completely lost faith in the justice system.’

‘He’ll be back home in Lithuania, free as a bird – popping to the shops, going out with friends, getting on with his life like nothing happened.

‘We don’t get that. We never will. Where is the justice in that?

‘The Prime Minister needs to take a long, hard look at this early release scheme and what it really means for victims like us.

What is the early release scheme?

The early release scheme was launched to free up space in jails with the Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, claiming the justice system would grind to a halt if nothing was done.

Under Labour’s scheme, a criminal given 14 years by a court will serve just five and a half years.

Those jailed for sex crimes, terrorism and serious violent crimes carrying more than four years in jail are excluded from the early release terms.

But violent offenders sentenced to less than four years can be freed early, including killers convicted of manslaughter.

As of January, more than 1,200 serious criminals who were sentenced to more than a decade in jail have now been released early by Labour.

‘It shouldn’t just be about freeing up prison cells – it’s about the lives that have been destroyed.’

Cielevicius was jailed in June 2023 after admitting causing death by dangerous driving.

Norwich Crown Court heard how had sped through red traffic lights in the moments before the crash.

The BMW was seen by witnesses travelling at speed and going through red traffic lights before the crash.

Forensic collision investigators were able to determine that the speedometer was stuck at 96mph.

Summer added: ‘I feel it is important that the public are aware of this new scheme and how it affects the victims.’

‘His crime is not seen as being severe enough to stop this from happening.

‘I am unsure how killing three people in the way he did is not counted as severe.

‘Yes, he has a ban from coming back to the UK but it’s not good enough.

‘He has not served his punishment and yet again justice is not served.’

James Wild, the Conservative MP for North West Norfolk, raised the matter at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, branding it a ‘terrible case’ and warning that ‘three years for three lives would be the final insult’.

He urged Sir Keir to intervene to prevent the ‘pitiful’ imminent release, saying such a short stretch behind bars would ‘undermine public confidence in our justice system’.

Sir Keir said he would look into the circumstances of the case.

He replied to Mr Wild: ‘Thank you for raising what is obviously a terrible case and I will make sure it is looked into, if he can provide further details, so we can do it as quickly as possible.’
