Erika Kirk conspiracy theory debunked after Candace Owens claims she removed wedding photo with Charlie from office

A conspiracy theory that Erika Kirk removed her wedding photo with Charlie has been debunked after the tale was promoted by newfound nemesis Candace Owens.

Owens, along with many on the internet, noticed a framed wedding photo previously displayed on the shelf during Charlie’s at-home interviews was nowhere to be seen.

While it was true that Erika moved the photo, it was not for malicious reasons as suggested by conspiracy theorists.

A Turning Point USA spokesperson told Newsweek, ‘Erika moved it to a lower shelf when her daughter asked to see it so she could hold and look at the photo.

‘It’s still on the studio shelf, just lower down where her daughter can look at it whenever she’s in there with her mom.’

Charlie, who founded Turning Point USA, was assassinated at age 31 at Utah Valley University last September. Within days, his wife assumed leadership of his organization and has been kept busy since, sitting for primetime interviews and making countless public appearances.

The theory gained traction after online sleuths realized the empty photo stand during a December 11 interview between Erika and Blaze TV CEO Glenn Beck.

During the conversation with Beck, Erika often glanced toward the bottom of the screen – a movement she later explained was because she was taking in Charlie’s belongings, having not been in his home office for some time.

The photo could be seen in numerous at-home interviews Charlie did from his office sitting on a shelf to the left

However, Owens said the widow claimed not to have moved her late husband’s items and questioned the idea that Erika had not been in her late husband’s home office since his death.

‘During that interview, she was playing the part as you are about to see of “this is my first time back in his office,” and she keeps looking down, and she says, “Sorry, I’m looking down. I’m just looking at you all of these things that Charlie left over on his desk,”‘ said Owens.

‘The obvious insinuation to the public being that she had not yet traversed into that space. She had not gone through the things.’

The right-wing podcaster questioned whether it was Erika’s first time seeing Charlie’s final notes on his desk, given the missing photo.

‘The internet was correct to call that out,’ said Owens.

During the interview, Erika showed a photo of a paper Charlie had written on that said ‘Family’, ‘Children’ and ‘Legacy’ versus ‘Careerism’, ‘Consumerism’ and ‘Loneliness’ written on the other.

A photo of Erika posted by her company on January 15, shows the widow has kept a photo of JD Vance and Charlie on her desk, along with a curious note written by her late husband

While their wedding picture appears to have been moved away, a photo posted by Erika’s company PROCLAIM x BIBLEin365 – a Christian clothing brand – on January 15 showed that she did keep a framed snapshot of Charlie with Vice President JD Vance.

The now-framed photo was taken during Turning Point USA’s town hall at High Point University in October 2024 and sits on the left side of her late husband’s desk.

The choice has fueled curiosity, particularly given previous speculation over the apparent closeness between Vance and Erika after the two shared a prolonged hug at Charlie’s memorial.

Most recently, she announced a 30-city speaking engagement series that she’s calling the ‘Make Heaven Crowded Tour 2026.’

But despite the fact Erika hasn’t ever been shy about her grief – often needing to dab away tears as she speaks about her late husband – her authenticity has, increasingly, come up for criticism.

In particular, certain subsets of social media – on both the political right and left – have alleged that Erika’s behavior seems rehearsed, performative or even fake.

Some go so far as to accuse her of ‘using’ her husband’s assassination for personal gain.

Nothing, her critics might say, supports that claim quite so much as an audio recording leaked this week by Owens.

The recording is of a conference call that took place around two weeks after Charlie Kirk’s murder.

The call is chaired by newly appointed Turning Point USA boss Erika, who can be heard congratulating staff for their hard work on her late husband’s memorial service, which she describes, while at times giggling, as ‘an event of the century.’

‘I think we’re at like 200,000 for merch sales. Don’t quote me on that, because I think it just keeps bumping up like crazy,’ she says, noting the event – which was held at a stadium in Arizona – brought in 300,000 new donors and 50,000 ‘new hat orders’.

‘It’s weird to say I’m excited. I really hesitate saying that. It’s really hard for me to say that. It’s a really weird thing to say,’ she continues.

‘But I think it comes from a space of peace knowing that God is using this and we’re humbly witnessing the gospel in real time.’

Owens – who has expended much of her energy in recent months spreading obscene conspiracy theories about the assassination of her former friend – suggested Kirk seems emotionally unfazed by her husband’s death in the call.

‘In my imagination, I just thought that she would be more upset. All of that, all of this makes my skin crawl. It genuinely makes my skin crawl,’ Owens said.
