Should you reply to personal questions asked by a recruiter you just met? I bet you’re a woman asking this question because this is the nonsense that a lot of women deal with. “So, you married? And yeah, got any kids?”
Now, in the US, these are illegal questions. But I would politely respond to this person, this recruiter, by saying, “How does this relate to my qualifications for the role? I’ve been on too many interviews where after someone asked me similar questions to this, I got hit on. I’m sure that’s not your intention, but understand I want to keep this on a purely professional level right now so that there’s no risk of that occurring.”
So in three sentences, you explained why it is you’re not going to respond to personal questions. “I’m sure that’s not your intention, but in the past, I’ve been hit on,” causes them to back away. Don’t answer personal questions.
