Progressive Planet’s PozGlass is a new alternative for cement that is designed to promote low-carbon construction materials. Cement production is one of the world’s largest sources of CO₂ emissions, and traditional additives like fly ash and slag are becoming harder to source. To address this, Progressive Planet has found a new use for urban glass waste, transforming it into a material that mimics the durability of ancient Roman concrete.
Working with Momentum Recycling, the process produces PozGlass and also creates byproducts such as sodium carbonate and limestone that can permanently trap carbon. Supported by Lafarge Canada and a $4.6 million grant from Sustainable Development Technology Canada, the company is preparing to build a pilot plant to scale the innovation.
PozGlass has the potential to replace up to half of traditional Portland cement, offering the construction industry a sustainable, circular solution to help reduce the industry’s carbon footprint.
