Functional Modern Dwellings : Maplewood Residence

The Maplewood Residence, a project spearheaded by Salem Architecture, represents a masterful synthesis of historical preservation and contemporary design. The architectural intervention transforms a 1940s stone house in Montreal’s Outremont neighborhood into a functional modern dwelling while honoring its original character.

During the renovation of the Maplewood Residence, Salem Architecture focused on spatial fluidity and material harmony. The firm employed warm walnut wood and soft travertine stone to create a cohesive, meditative atmosphere throughout the living spaces. Strategic interventions included enlarging rear façade openings to flood the interior with natural light and custom-designed elements like the dining room light fixture and integrated bedroom storage that blend aesthetic refinement with practical innovation.

The Maplewood Residence project demonstrates particular sensitivity in balancing preservation with modernization — it maintains the home’s classical essence while introducing clean lines, concealed technical systems, and flexible spatial configurations to accommodate contemporary family life.
